What is the Obsession!

I have read these boards for a long long time. I am not the type to participate yet just read what others have to say. BUT!!! I have to ask this.

What is the obsession to the Baltimore Ravens and Joe Flacco????

Yes I know Matty and Joe from same draft class yada yada. However that does not give good enough reason for all the discussions about Matty and Joe not to mention the whole Ravens team.

Has anyone even look at the amount of threads concerning Flacco and the Ravens in this forum?
What puzzles me the most is thr Ravens have no effect as to the outcome of the Falcons other then one game every few years which even then does not make or break either teams season.

They are not in the division not to mention not even in the same conference. The Falcons are not even a thought in the Ravens mind.

Now what I find the most amusing about all of this is.

In the many many threads comparing Matty and Joe the argument is mostly how Joe had better weapons, team around him etc etc… and yet Matty is doing just as much with less talk.

Yet, when comparing the two teams as a whole then all of a sudden the Falcons have better weapons, and a team as whole
WTH?????? Can not have it both ways.

Seriously what gives????

Unless the Falcons are playing the Ravens in the Super Bowl I see no reason why half of this forum is based on a team and their QB that has zero baring on the Falcons.

Falcons sticking with ‘the process’

ESPN

When I was on the phone with John Clayton on Sunday night working on our Great Debate for Wednesday, he threw out a great stat.

Clayton, who should have been a rocket scientist if he wasn’t so great at what he does, was breaking down rosters in every way you could imagine. According to Clayton, and this is current as of late last night, the Atlanta Falcons lead the league in fewest new players.

They have only eight new players on their roster. The list includes free-agent pickup Dunta Robinson, undrafted tight end Michael Palmer and the draft class — linebacker Sean Weatherspoon, defensive tackle Corey Peters, offensive linemen Joe Hawley and Mike Johnson, cornerback Dominique Franks and safety Shann Schillinger. Clayton’s list doesn’t include center Rob Bruggeman and running back Antone Smith because each of those guys spent time on Atlanta’s practice squad last year.

What’s this all mean? Coach Mike Smith and general manager Thomas Dimitroff really are sticking to what they like to call “the process,’’ which basically means building through the draft, adding a free agent here and making sure you keep your core players.

It’s a formula a lot of teams talk about but don’t truly follow as they often get desperate and go outside for free agents. Entering their third season together, Smith and Dimitroff have stuck with the plan and it’s been highlighted by the spectacular 2008 draft class.

The Falcons have had back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in franchise history, and their roster displays a lot of continuity. We’ll see if that translates into them winning big, but I think they’re headed in the right direction.

When you’re able to cut a player like cornerback Chevis Jackson, it shows you’ve built a roster with pretty strong depth.

I am one of only 13 Falcon Fans that live in Florida

I dont think a lot of you fully understand the heil I go thru down here supporting my team. I put up with a lot of crap, esp. down here in the middle of Buc country. When I go to a sports bar down here to want to watch a Falcon game, they always tell me No. Because the TV is reserved for something else. So I just stopped going to sports bars here, and am forced to streem the game online on my laptop.

At work, I have been ridiculed and made fun of for being a Falcon fan. Not so much now, since the Bucs suck now, and we are pretty good. I get a little more respect now than I did 3 years ago.

This is just an FYI to some people here who dont think I am a Falcon fan. I put up with a lot of crap that you dont have to put up with, but I put up with it and I march on.

I grew up in Ga. for 35 years - born and raised. I moved to Florida 5 years ago. As far as football goes, I am considered an enemy down here. But all 41 friends that I have respect my allegiance to the Falcons (and Braves). I have stood Up, even during the Petrino season.

Now having said that, I just want to say I love you all - even the posters that hate me here. Because I dont have Falcon Fan friends down here to talk to, so I come here.

And that is all I wanted to say about that. Thanks.

Ravens corner situation better than ours?

http://www.nfl.com/videos/auto/09000d5d81a47852/Playoff-caliber-teams-Don-t-be-certain

i strongly disagree with them. ladarius webb is coming off of injury, fabian washington is coming off of injury, foxworth is out for the year. they aquired josh wilson a week or two ago, but josh wilson was the nickel guy in a HORRIBLE seattle secondary last year. they’re probably going to have to start chris carr (career return man/backup).

we have grimes and owens who may get pushed around a little by big WRs, but definitely have shown they can play. and then we have brian williams (really solid nickel) and a young promising corner in domonique franks. that’s not even bringing dunta robinson into the picture. dunta robinson may not be a shut down corner but i highly doubt he’ll be worse than houston.

“I’m ready to take it from the practice field into the game,” Robinson said.

Robinson, the franchise’s major offseason acquisition, did not play during the preseason after suffering a hamstring injury early in training camp.

All eyes will be focused on the Athens native when he takes the field at 1 p.m. Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

He was signed to a six-year, $57.5 million contract and is expected to add some blanket coverage to a secondary that finished 28th in the league (242.1 yards per game) against the pass last season.

While he didn’t play in the exhibition games, Robinson has been practicing for the past two weeks. After last season’s rash of injuries, the Falcons were extremely cautious with Robinson.

He was close to playing in the third exhibition game against Miami. He wanted to match up against Brandon Marshall, one of the league’s top receivers.

But during the pre-game medical evaluation it was determined that there was still some soreness in his hamstring. With Miami’s dirt infield and the soreness, it was determined that Robinson shouldn’t play.

Robinson doesn’t feel that he missed much by not going up against Marshall.

“I go up against Roddy [White] every day,” Robinson said. “So I face a great receiver every day in practice.”

He wanted to play in the exhibition finale against Jacksonville, but the coaching staff elected to sit 22 of the 24 projected starters.

“Obviously, that was the best thing for me, because now it feels much better,” Robinson said. “Not rushing it was a good thing. Coming out here and getting focused and still getting the mental reps was a good thing.”

The Falcons are counting on Robinson to add some leadership and toughness to what was the team’s weakest unit last season.

“He is a guy who’s very focused,” general manager Thomas Dimitroff said. “He’s about physicality. He tries to make plays on the ball. He’s a guy that we expect to be a difference maker for us in the secondary.”

In free agency, Robinson ordered his agent to negotiate solely with the Falcons. He wanted to be on a team he thought was on the rise in the NFL.

“You don’t want to go to a team that’s already accomplished,” Robinson said. “You want to build something. That way you feel like you helped instead of jumping on the bandwagon like some guys do. I definitely feel that I can help this team get to where they are trying to go.”

Robinson has garnered the respect of his fellow cornerbacks in a short period of time. They look to the six-year veteran for guidance and skill development tips.

“They also look to him for positive leadership,” Dimitroff said. “It’s understated. There is a [calmness] and a seriousness to his leadership, and they really respect that in Dunta.”

They also know that he will be ready when they take the field on Sunday.

“He’s looking real good,” safety Thomas DeCoud said. “He’s breaking on the ball. He’s making plays on the ball. … He’s getting everything all greased up.”

Robinson didn’t practice last preseason, but the circumstances were much different. He was unhappy with his contract situation in Houston.

He signed a one-year tender the week before the start of the season and played in the opener.

“I’m not worried at all,” Robinson said. “I just want to get out here with this defense.”

Robinson was on hand for the offseason program and worked with the defense. But he played on the left side.

Against Pittsburgh, he’ll play on the right side and either Brent Grimes or Christopher Owens will line up on the left side.

It will be the first time playing together in that alignment, but Robinson doesn’t think cohesiveness will be an issue.

“I think the guys understand me and know what I can do,” Robinson said. “They understand what kind of player I am. They understand what I can do on the football field.”

You can tell that Robinson is getting a little antsy. He clearly wants some action.

While he knows he’s expected to provide tight pass coverage, he’s looking forward to the hitting aspects of the job.

“Blitzing and hitting quarterbacks is what I prefer,” Robinson said. “A lot of guys, quarterbacks and receivers, after I hit them, they look around and think it was somebody else. They don’t think it was the little dude. … They expect me to make interceptions, but they don’t expect me to come up and knock their heads off.”

Falcons Counting Heavily on Secondary

Ray Glierby Ray Glier

The Atlanta Falcons fired their secondary coach, the Hall of Famer Emmitt Thomas. They signed a cornerback, Dunta Robinson, to a $57 million contract, even though the corner has not appeared in the Pro Bowl. Saturday, they cut a third-round draft pick, Chevis Jackson, who was a draft pick of the GM and you know how much the GMs hate to eat their own.

The Falcons are serious about getting their pass defense fixed. They have to be.

If they are going to play in the same division as the Saints, the Falcons have to win one of those games with New Orleans and they have to stop the pass.

At some point, the defensive line has to lend a hand and get a rush, but that does not always happen. The DBs have to make plays.
