Sean Weatherspoon - Something Special - Dr. Billings - 09-28-2010 12:53 PM

It was the last play of the first half in the New Orleans game. The Saints are marching downfield and the clock is against them. If they get into field goal range, they can score and steal the momentum established by the Falcons latest score by Michael Turner.

On the final play before the half you see Drew Brees instruct his running back Pierre Thomas to screen (block) #56 (Weatherspoon). That would allow the Saints wide receiver Meachum and Brees go to guy on that play to perhaps, run up the field for extra yards or definitely get out-of-bounds to stop the clock.

The play by Sean Weatherspoon went unnoticed. It was a play a seasoned veteran would have made, not a rookie in his third regular season game in the NFL. Watch the play, Weatherspoon fought off Pierre chased Meachum and tackled him before he could get out-of-bounds. Drew Brees tried, unsuccessfully, to down the ball (in hopes of getting one last shot at a hail Mary).

However, because of the relentless hustle of Spooon the clock ran down to zero and the half was over. The momentum was still in the Falcons favor and the two teams went into their locker rooms, without fan fare, perhaps the biggest play of the game went unnoticed.

Sean Weatherspoon is something special. When he was carted off the field, my heart dropped in fear of losing him for next week's 49ers game. It is said, he is fine, he was cramping up. So I look for Mr. Gore to get a load of Spoon this week. I anticipate we will see many special plays by Spooon in the future.

Don't you mean Sam Weatherspoon? That's what the announcers called him...

I wonder what 49ers offensive player is going to get SPOOOOOOOON fed this weekend?

That Spoon play did not go unnoticed. I spoke with a member of the staff last night, running through some memorable plays from Sunday, and we talked at length about the last two minutes of the first half. I mentioned that the coaching and play calling during that period was genius, running out most of the clock and forcing the Saints to burn two timeouts. He said, "Yeah, but did you see Weatherspoon's tackle to keep the receiver inbounds? Even with only half a minute, the Saints are dangerous. Weatherspoon's play was the one that killed their hopes."

We went out and brought in spoon and DR to beat the aints. Period.

They both came up big to help us do just that.
