Each November, the NFL issues a 200- to 300-page bid book to cities looking to host the game. Draft bids are due in April, and the NFL’s 32 owners vote on the location at an owners’ meeting sometime thereafter. Baseline hosting requirements, according to SportsBusiness Journal, include the following:

A 70,000-seat stadium or one that can be expanded to at least that size
At least 19,000 hotel rooms that require three- or four-night minimum stays, including rooms for both teams and NFL personnel
A range of nearby facilities or spaces to house the media and accreditation center for more than 4,000 media representatives, the NFL Experience, the NFL Tailgate Party, and the like
An average daily temperature of 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10 °C) or above the week of the game, or a climate-controlled indoor facility
Provision of police, fire, ambulance, and other infrastructure services at no cost to the NFL

Over the years, insiders indicate that the politics of the bid process have ratcheted up considerably—as have the perks. The 2007 Miami bid committee threw in the use of a yacht for each of the 32 owners, while Tampa offered all the teams free golf. The 2011 North Texas group went green instead, offering the NFL an additional $1 million to cover game-day expenses at Cowboys Stadium, enticing enough as that new facility is on its own.

Miami and New Orleans best meet all of these criteria. That is why New Orleans has hosted so many and will host many more. There is no question that they will remain in a frequent rotation. Now, 2018 coincides with the city's 300th birthday and would be a major media draw for the NFL. No one else can match that alone. On top of that, New Orleans is already planning to submit a bid (monetarily) that no other site can match. This is all about advertising. It is all about money. The owners make the decision on the Super Bowl site. Benson will have had his politicking done at that time. He will have cut deals with a majority of owners to ensure the 2018 date. I wouldn't be surprised if there were no other bids for that year.

It's all about money? Congratulations Dallas, you get to host all remaining Super Bowls.

Seriously, do you think before you troll post? As my sources pointed out, Indianapolis and Minnesota have already bid, Dallas is in the process of preparing to bid and Denver has been invited to bid.

Try reading my post before you troll reply next time.

You obviously haven't been to many cities then

NO got the bid because the NFL wanted to help with rebuilding after Katrina. They wanted help and show the city was ready. It worked.

New york got it because of 9/11 and the new stadium. That's gonna be a cold game. Too bad beyonce won't be performing in something sheer next year...

The NFL also promised it to KC if they build a retractable roof stadium because it will honor Lamar Hunt for creating the Super Bowl. Haven't gotten there yet.

Sure, back away from your words now. I knew you wouldn't stand behind them when someone called you out. I've been here since the beginning, helped set up our fan charity foundation, and run several fantasy leagues through these boards over the years (even paid leagues). And I'M the one not trustworthy.

Put your money where your mouth is, man. You made the bet, not me. Back it up! Your money would just be going to a Falcons fan charity anyway, because that would be the most entertaining thing to do with it.

Tell you what? Loser of the bet has to give the $100 to this site to help with the hosting fees and all, and if they do not, their account gets banned. You don't have to trust me for that. And if you think I'd not honor my words, you'd have removed me from this site... nothing I could do, and my reputation ruined.

So either take the bet, or apologize for making statements you won't stand behind.

And what was the reason New Orleans hosted the other NINE Super Bowls? It certainly had nothing to do with Katrina. It is because New Orleans is the best equipped to handle the influx of people and the week-long activities efficiently.

The bet I offered was with phocis, but this sounds even better. I love this site and would love to see you contribute an additional $100 to keep it going. The host city of the 2018 Super Bowl will be announced in April of 2014.

It's a bet!

So they are going to announce the host site a month before bids are due? Ballsy move...

There seems to be more than a little uncertainty about the actual dates. This source has the announcement taking place in March of 2014.

"The Vikings will have a follow-up meeting with the NFL in a couple of weeks, then organize a host committee with business and community leaders from the east and west metropolitan areas. The NFL is expected to decide on the site for the 2018 Super Bowl by March 2014."

I had seen the April 2014 time-frame a couple of places recently. Regardless, it doesn't matter when it becomes official as long as Drathdon confirms.
