Potential Falcons First Round Picks - Kawann Short, DT, Purdue - RFlagg - 01-28-2013 10:55 AM Just to give us something else to talk about, I've decided to look at Mock Drafts to see people have us taking, and then to do an overview of each player and their potential. Right now, I've got quite a few of these planned because every site I visited seemed to project the Falcons to take someone different. I'm starting out with Purdue DT Kawann Short. Short was a 4 year starter for Purdue, and is currently projected to be a late first round or early second pick (though I have seem him projected as high as 13th to Pittsburgh). Vitals Height - 6'3" Weight - 308 lbs. Arm Length - 33 3/4" 40 Time - 5.16 (Unofficial) Squat - 600+ lbs. Bench - 400+ lbs. Stats 2009 - 4.0 TFL, 30 Solo Tackles, 47 Total Tackles, 1 Pass Break Up, 2 INTs 2010 - 12.5 TFL, 30 Solo Tackles, 41 Total Tackles, 4.5 Sacks, 8 Pass Break Ups, 2 Blocked Kicks 2011 - 17.5 TFL, 29 Solo Tackles, 54 Total Tackles, 6.5 Sacks, 2 Pass Break Ups, 1 FF, 1 Blocked Kick 2012 - 15.5 TFL, 35 Solo Tackles, 43 Total Tackles, 7.0 Sacks, 4 Pass Break Ups, 1 FF, 4 Blocked Kicks Totals - 49.5 TFL, 124 Solo Tackles, 185 Total Tackls, 18 Sacks, 15 Pass Break Ups, 2 FF, 2 INTs, 7 Blocked Kicks Highlights Analysis Short has definitely shown some flashes in his college career, and he has the chance to become a good player on the NFL level. Here's what I noticed about him. Pros Showed good pursuit when the ball carrier came to his side of the line. Has a good rip move for a first move that can split blocks and allow him to get into the backfield. When he sees the QB attempting to throw the ball, he gets his hands up to try to bat it down. Cons Got caught in the wash too many times. If his first move didn't work on pass plays he instead would stand up his blocker and hope the ball was thrown near him to bat it down. Has trouble getting of established blocks. My Thoughts I think Short has good intangibles and the potential to be a big time DT in the NFL, however from what I've seen, effort might be an issue. If he's still on the board, I doubt the Falcons pick him for a couple of reasons. 1, the lack of effort he sometimes displays would not sit well with the coaching staff or management. 2, Unless we get rid of both Peria Jerry and Vance Walker, and are planning to let either Babineaux or Peters walk after next season, DT isn't as big of a need as other positions. Unless every other player we are targeting is off the board, I highly doubt Short will be the pick. RE: Potential Falcons First Round Picks - Kawann Short, DT, Purdue - ggp - 01-28-2013 11:16 AM This prospect has every physical feature that any team would want in a DT. I don't know him, but from what I have read, he lacks a consistent motor. If this is true, I would stay away from him. When first round DT's bust, it is due to injury or lack of aggressiveness. RE: Potential Falcons First Round Picks - Kawann Short, DT, Purdue - Beef - 01-28-2013 01:11 PM I want SMU DE Margus Hunt. Go look him up and post some stuff. I can't right now, am on my cell at lunch. 6'8 280, runs a 4.7 40, has the junior world record in discus throw, strong as hell. Very raw. Moves here from Estonia on track and field scholarship to SMU in 08. But when they dropped all track and field scholarships he tried out for the football team, made it as walk-on, got scholarship in 09, and was starting DE in 2010. Prior to 2009, the only semblence of football he had any inkling of was playing Madden on Xbox. But 4.7 40 at 6'8 280 is insane. Dude is an athletic freak of nature. Possible JJ Watt 2.0 after some professional coaching. He was projected for third or fourth round at one point, but then he got 2.5 sacks and 2 forced fumbles in the SMU/Hawaii bowl game and he's going to probably light up the combine, so he'll certainly move up. Hopefully not too far though. I would die to get a top RB at 30 and this guy with our second pick at 60. In my mock draft, I actually had us taking him in the 2nd round, though I've got a feeling he's gonna end up as a first rounder after the combine and his pro day. RE: Potential Falcons First Round Picks - Kawann Short, DT, Purdue - papachaz - 01-28-2013 01:19 PM good thread, thanks! I'm with you, in that some of the things I've read about Short would keep us from seriously considering him. He could turn into a haynesworth 2.0 type player. One thing our team is known for, is "TEAM" and our guys playing hard, don't think someone that doesn't fit that mold comes in here RE: Potential Falcons First Round Picks - Kawann Short, DT, Purdue - Beef - 01-28-2013 01:21 PM Yeah I was thinking same thing. Honestly I think a decent RB like Barner could fall to 60 as well, so I wouldn't mind having to take Hunt at 30. I mean you could easily add 20 lbs to this kid and have him play DE in a 3-4. And he wouldn't lose much speed. Can you imagine a 300 lb 3-4 DE that's 6'8 and faster than most LB's in the league? You can teach technique. You can't teach size and speed. This kid has gifts. RE: Potential Falcons First Round Picks - Kawann Short, DT, Purdue - Swift Is a Die Hard - 01-28-2013 01:32 PM Margus Hunt was man handled vs top tier competion . I swear people read some mocks and become infuated with players cause of measurables lol Dude is also going to be 26/27 years old RE: Potential Falcons First Round Picks - Kawann Short, DT, Purdue - Swift Is a Die Hard - 01-28-2013 01:33 PM as for Short . If he is around would be a solid pick . Can't argue with picking Short RE: Potential Falcons First Round Picks - Kawann Short, DT, Purdue - Beef - 01-28-2013 02:39 PM (01-28-2013 01:32 PM)Swift Is a Die Hard Wrote: Margus Hunt was man handled vs top tier competion . Wow, he's 2 years older than the average rookie. I mean he's over the hill in only 8 more years. I guess he's too old to play for anyone. Not. And what "top tier competition" are you talking about exactly? Check this. The best teams SMU played were Baylor, Texas A&M, TCU, Southern Miss, and Houston. Hunt got a sack against ALL of them except Baylor. Texas A&M LT, Luke Joeckel is rated the #1 OT and a top 5 pick in the draft and Hunt got a sack against him. You're full of shit as usual. RE: Potential Falcons First Round Picks - Kawann Short, DT, Purdue - Swift Is a Die Hard - 01-28-2013 02:55 PM Margus Hunt was dominated by Luke what are you talking about Beef .His sack didnt even come against Luke in that game . LOLz . He also had a horrible senior bowl as well NFL | Margus Hunt disappoints From: Footballguys.com News Blogger - 1:53pm - January 25, 2013 Southern Methodist DE Margus Hunt was a big disappointment at the Senior Bowl this week and was a non-factor most of the time, although he displayed traits of a power defensive end with natural explosion. Hunt appeared robotic on the field and struggled to shed blockers while playing upright. It will be questionable if he can make it into the first round of the draft. |
