Mike Smith - special teams coach? - ChrisD - 01-15-2013 11:17 AM

I keep hearing over and over on the radio and TV that there are 2 defensive coaches, one offensive coach and one special teams coach left in the playoffs. They are calling Mike Smith a "special teams" coach when it comes to head coaching. Why?

Am I the only one who doesn't really understand this? Are they saying our special teams is the anchor to our team? Mike Smith was a defensive coordinator before he came to Atlanta, wouldn't that make him a defensive coach? I'm a little confused as to why they are calling him that.

It's Harbaugh in Baltimore pretty sure he was recruited having been special teams coach at his previous spot

Mike Smith and Bill Belichick both have defensive background before becoming HC.
Jim Harbaugh was QB coach before becoming HC at Stanford and SF.
John Harbaugh was a ST coach before his head coach gig at Baltimore
