We miss the two point conversion and it's 26 to 7... Three TD's makes it 28 to 26 and that last FG still wins the game for us.
But you don't guard against blowing a 3 TD lead in the 4th quarter. I can't think of any reason why a coach would try to guard himself against his team blowing a 3 TD lead in the 4th quarter. It's just not something that crosses your mind. If you're up by 3 TD's in the 4th quarter you expect to win comfortably making the 2-point conversion option moot.

Imagine the praise Coach Smith would have gotten for this foresight. I guarantee there are coaches out there who would have known to go for 2 in that situation. I've seen it done. Those coaches are doing their job. Coach Smith, whom I love, missed this one.

doesnt matter we won. Best part about the playoffs is all you have to do is win.

It's not guarding... it's putting your foot on the throat of the opponent and playing to win! To crush their spirit!
I haven't got to see the San Fran game yet but I'm sure i saw a highlight where they went for 2 even with a lead?

When you are up by 20, the other team has hope they can win with 3 TD. It showed in their play. When you are up by 21, that makes it that much harder for the opponent to see victory. It shows we are playing to win, sets the tone, and keeps the players focused on the goal.
And in this case, it would have cost us "nothing"!
If you don't go for it that time, you never should go for it until the end of the game, which I think is wrong.

When did they go for 2? When they had only a 14 point lead? That's different from a 3 TD lead. Look I'm not saying that it was the right or wrong decision, just saying I have never seen a team go for 2 up by 3 TDs.

It wasn't a 3 TD lead, though. That's the point. The 2 point conversion would have made it 3 TD lead.

20 points is 3 TD's. It takes 3 TD's to beat you.

totally agree. my son in law and I discussed this at the time. no point in NOT going for it really
the thing I'm still shaking my head about is why call the TO with 13 seconds left. you have time to let it run down to 4 or 5 seconds, esp when you already know you're not going to try another play

Most coaches don't go for two. Which is weird. Its only 2 yards. If you can't get two yards then you have no business being in the NFL. Imagine a 24-0 score rather than 21-0 That's four scores folks.
