Atlanta Falcons all time least penalized team. - McUser - 01-07-2013 09:36 PM

Saw this post over on the NFC South blog on espn.com That's an amazing record to me, and the fact that we rank third all time as well with the 2010 team speaks to the quality of coach that Mike Smith is. Second is the 2008 Patriots. I'm very proud of the team.

Quote:Highlighted by Drew Brees setting a new NFL record for consecutive passes in NFL history, there were a lot of milestones reached in the NFC South this year.

But I was just handed one that I don’t think got much, if any, recognition. The Atlanta Falcons set new NFL records for fewest accepted penalties and penalty yards against them in a 16-game season. Tip of the cap to Brian Cearns and Matt Haley of the Falcons' media relations department for pointing this one out.

The Falcons were penalized just 55 times for 415 yards. For the sake of comparison, the Seattle Seahawks, who the Falcons play in Sunday’s playoff game, were penalized 110 times for 890 yards.

The previous record for fewest penalties in a season was 57, set by New England in 2008. The 2010 Falcons rank third with 58 penalties, which shows a pretty impressive trend by teams coached by Mike Smith.

The previous record for fewest penalty yards was set by Seattle with 428 in 2007.
