What will be the next trend or big thing in the NFL? - mdrake34 - 08-23-2012 11:55 AM

Will it be offensive or defensive? Over the last decade, we've seen the rise (and somewhat fall) of the popularity of the 3-4 defense, we've seen the rise of the athletic, deep threat TE, we've seen the emergence of "hybrid" defenders, we've seen, though it's been totally unimpressive, Tim Tebow, and we briefly saw the wildkat.

What will be the next trend? With continued rule changes that favor passing and high scoring games, will there be some kind of new running game that will emerge? Will a new type of defensive scheme become popular? What are the odds it will NOT come from Mularkey?

What do you guys think?

Just a thought, but with the influx of new, fast QBs coming into the league, what are the odds of the old wishbone triple option showing up? Think about it, a team would need a mobile QB that can throw, 2 good running backs, a full back that can block but also run, and a couple of good receiving threats at WR and TE. I know people always say it would never work in today's NFL, but why not?

I've thought about this, or maybe even a Gus Malzahn-type spread offense. People immediately retort "you can't run those offenses in the NFL, the defenders in the NFL are too fast." Well, aren't the offensive skill position players faster too? Seems to me like speed on offense v. defense should even out at the NFL level.

I honestly think the run and shoot, given the right players and system, could work in today's NFL. We're practically seeing parts of it in the high-powered offenses that make a living off having more skill players than you can cover.

I'd love to see someone crazy enough to go shotgun, 5 wide every play with a roster of all #1 and #2 wr's.

Different breed of LB or S

Regardless of whether or not the option would work we will never see it. The QB is paid too much money to have him getting hit every play and that's exactly what you get with a true option offense.

Plus it would be very difficult to find a guy that could take that amount of punishment, be both athletic enough and be able to make reads fast enough against NFL defenses and be able to throw with accuracy, not many of those types around.

I thought about doing that in madden this year.

How about the 1-1-9? 1 DL, 1 LB, 9 DB's lol

I think the running back by committee will become the norm. You can have a bruiser for the goal line, a between the tackles/2-down RB and a receiving RB all in one back field. It's rare that you have that workhorse back that every single team used to have, back in the "day". I also agree with the previous comment of the new breed of LB and Safety. I could also see more 3WR 1RB 1TE base offensive sets as the league becomes even more pass oriented.

The power run game will make a comeback within the next three years and dominate for another 7-10.

Over the last 4 years cornerbacks have been the top position drafted among NFL teams. In 2012, 34 cornerbacks were chosen; in 2011, 39 corners were picked; in 2010, 33 cornerbacks; in 2009, 36 corners came off the board. Corners are great for covering spread wide out systems but lousy at stopping bruising running backs. Certain teams will start to expose this and you will see more 1500-1800 yard rushers and less 4500+ passers.

Of course this is all dependent on the college game. the NFL is only as good as the players feeding into it. As recruiters look for talent they look for guys who fit their offenses. For long time the spread was popular in college so little wide receivers and spread QB's were the flavor. But pro set teams are starting to get control of the top college teams and talent. Big backs will make a comeback and CBs wont be able to stop them. Of course this is all cyclical. Once the league stocks up on LBs and DTs to stop the run the spread will come back and dominate until CBs take over again and so on.
