ESPN - AUTiger7222 - 07-26-2012 09:49 PM Antonio Pierce just said the Falcons are the team that will bounce back after disappointing last season. RE: ESPN - swanlee - 07-27-2012 01:50 PM The fact that going 10-6 and making the playoffs is considered a disappointing season is truly a statement to how far this franchise has come. As a fan starting in 1986 I never lose perspective of this. RE: ESPN - ChrisD - 07-27-2012 02:51 PM I don't think anyone is looking at our record or making the playoffs as the disappointment Swanlee. I believe it was the 24-2 Loss that made the season a disappointment for us as fans and the general media. I just can't help but think about the fact that there is really no where else for us to go but upward. Our team is put together so well, the only REAL hole that I believe we have to worry about is at MLB. But honestly, I think that Petey can play at MLB just fine. I believe he did so in Jacksonville and he did it quite well. Then again, I'm not positive on that. Our team is going to be great this year. I can't wait! It's amazing when you think that getting blown out in a playoff game makes the season a disappointment. I couldn't agree more. For the better part of my life I would have given just about anything to end the back to back season curse. We've now had four in a row and three playoff births. That was a disappointing day, and no doubt a disappointing end to the season, but anyone who thinks the season, or any of the last 4 seasons were disappointments are either new fans and just don't know any better (and hopefully they never will) or they have a huge sense of entitlement and should be subjected to reliving either of the Marion Campbell eras over and over and over. I do understand the sting of the playoff loss though, to this day one of the worst things I've ever felt was that playoff loss in the 12-4 1980 season to an inferior (by their own admission) Dallas team. Hell, it took 30 years before I could even watch a recap of that game. I have no doubt we go to the Superbowl if we took care of business that day. Home field advantage against a Philly team we had already beaten on the road on a Monday night. But we didn't and Jaworski goes instead. Even then though, as disemboweling as that game was, the season itself was fantastic. Oh to have William Andrews again... The season to a certain degree is a disappointment when you consider what our expectations have become. The Falcons are no longer a team that you hope to just win 8 games and finish at .500. No the Falcons are now expected to be Super Bowl contenders and anything less is a disappointment. RE: ESPN - ChrisD - 07-27-2012 09:49 PM I'm not a new fan, and I do know better. I understand that the last 4 seasons have been absolutely amazing. But to sit and tell me that you weren't disappointed last year when we lost, and you didn't expect us to go deeper into the playoffs just tells me you didn't think our team was very good. And our team was awesome last season, they choked. RE: ESPN - juraitwaluzka - 07-27-2012 10:41 PM Sure I was disappointed in the way it ended, but I don't look back at the season as a whole as a failure. We lost to the superbowl champs and looked stupid doing it, just like the year before. But with different seeding maybe we go farther. That's just the nature of the NFL playoffs, there are no guarantees, it's hard to win the Superbowl for any team, ask the Packers last year and the Patriots the year before that (a combined 29-3). We faced bad matchups each of the last two playoffs and had a crap game plan to go along with it. But after the season is done I look back at the totality of it, not just the ending. I enjoyed most of the season and was frustrated at times too, which is how it's going to be unless we go undefeated, but the overall experience was a positive one. I don't look back at any of the last 4 seasons and say "ugh" like I have for most of the previous seasons. I know what it's like to have no shot and it's not like that now at all. We have a damn good team with a damn good staff and a top notch organization. We have our shot. We have failed miserably the past two playoff appearances but it doesn't erase the success that it takes to get that far. In seasons past we would make our playoff appearance, build up hope then look like a bunch of buffoons the following season. For me the difference is one of confidence. I guess I can deal with the playoff exits better now than in the past because I know we'll be back next year and try to make another run. In the past it was much more difficult because if we didn't win it all that year it might be half a decade before seeing the post season again. It was much more miserable. Now it's much easier to have patience. I guess it all comes down to expectations and perspective. For me, I always say going into a season that all I can ask as a fan is that my team plays their way into the playoffs and gives themselves a chance to go on a roll and win it all. We've seen dynasties do it, we've seen 9-7 teams do it. There is no magic formula, No, just play your way in and get on a roll and as a fan, enjoy the ride. In other words, GO FALCONS and FUCK THE saints!! |
