The question is who will they lose to free agency in the next four or five years if he gets the long term deal he wants. It could be money well spent if he does. It could become a disaster within a couple of years. If that goober on his cheek goes malignant he may suffer a critical face cancer. That is what is taking so long. Loomis wants to insure that the team ISN'T crippled by any deal made. The next player of impact that will be coming up for renewal is Graham in two years. As of now, the key core are all under long term deals, except, of course, Brees. (especially with Brees throwing the ball) You simply have no concept of how bad our previous OC, Mike Mularkey, held back our offense. Atlanta easily had one of the most (easily top 3) predictable offenses in the entire league. On top of that, MM seriously mis-utilized players like Douglas, Gonzales, Turner, and Quizz. And worst of all, openly admitting to the world that he doesn't like screens and claimed that it's just something we don't do, he set our offensive line up to be at a tremendous disadvantage as opposing DL's, knowing we ran no screens and very little play-action dumps in the flats or short middle, simply pinned their ears back and bullrushed the shit out of our OL on virtually every down without hesitation ever. This year, you're going to be very surprised what a different philosphy will do for our OL and how much better they will seem for it. With a pass game that includes significantly more throws to our RB's and slot receiver, DL's will be forced to play the guessing game and they will get burned a lot for it. Our running game will improve as a result, and our deep and wide passing game will too, by a ton. Matt is going to have more time to throw those 20+ yard routes and finally have RB's in the receiving game to fall back on rather than throwing it away out of bounds or taking a sack. Roddy + Julio + HD + Gonzo + Quizz (and I'd bet Meier gets a bunch of action this year too) are going to put up receiving numbers very few thought the Falcons could. Will we put up 5000 like NO might? I think we'll be closer to 5k than we are to 4k, that's for sure. And then the key is, we are going to have a dominant defense this year. Much better than last year and better than the Saints. Our DL, LB, and secondary will all be better than NO's. So we won't have to set records or get over 5k yards, even though I think we will come close this year. Our defense will actually be a factor and keep good offenses from beating us. Atlanta easily had one of the most (easily top 3) predictable offenses in the entire league. Then it should be a good challenge! I am really looking forward to this year. The Saints have better team returning and two major factors of motivation. First, the so called bounty bullcrap, and second, the Super Bowl in the Dome. The team is as talented as it has ever been and is more motivated than ever. I would even say far more motivated than the year they did win it all. That is the realist in me ... and Vegas odds makers. So your telling me that the saints don't need a genius head coach at all and his assistant for half the season. The players can run the show? Wow...
