John Clayton on the Saints/Brees situation
link

Quote:The delay in the Saints getting a long-term deal done with Drew Brees has been one of the most baffling stories of the NFL offseason.

Both sides have until July 16 to carve out such a deal, and I still think that will happen. In fact, I came up with 23.5 million reasons a deal will be struck in the next week. The Saints can't afford to franchise him next year both from the financial and the personnel standpoint.

Unless the Saints plan to release him -- which can't be the case -- the salary-cap impact of a $23.6 million franchise tag in 2013 would be devastating to the franchise, so let's study the numbers.

The cap is only expected to increase from $120.6 million to around $121 million. With one unsigned draft choice, the Saints are already about $3 million over for next year and they have about $2.2 million of room for this season. Franchising Brees again would put the Saints more than $26 million over the cap and give them limited options for next year.

First, they would have to start evaluating expendable players. Cutting Jonathan Vilma would save them $6 million, so you can understand why Vilma's fighting as hard as he can to overturn his suspension. Because he would be the highest cap savings on the Saints' 2013 roster, he would lose this year's salary if the suspension holds and then would face the possibility of being off the roster next February.

The Saints could save $16 million by cutting linebacker Will Herring, $2.5 million by cutting running back Pierre Thomas and $1.7 million by cutting tight end David Thomas. Figuring a long-term deal with Brees might cost $10 million to $12 million, any of those four players might be cap casualties anyway, but the extra cap expense of a Brees franchise tag would cause more problems.

The Saints would have to look at whether or not they could keep safety Roman Harper, whose release would save them $3.4 million.

The Saints had $15.7 million of cap room headed into the 2012 offseason. They didn't re-sign wide receiver Robert Meachem, guard Carl Nicks, cornerback Tracy Porter, linebacker Jo-Lonn Dunbar and seven backups.

They freed up $14.5 million of cap room by restructuring five contracts, and in doing so, they had the luxury of signing guard Ben Grubbs, defensive tackle Brodrick Bunkley and linebackers Curtis Lofton, David Hawthorne and Chris Chamberlain.

Franchising Brees would make it difficult to re-sign 2013 free agents Devery Henderson, Sedrick Ellis, Jermon Bushrod, Scott Shanle and Jonathan Casillas.

All signs point to a deal getting done this week -- or else

Speaking of being absolute, I hate that people automatically think that every defensive player has the same intent of inflicting as much pain as possible. Thats not the case. There is a reason besides talent that some players are better than others. Some people are lazy, don't work hard om their craft, afraid of injury if they hit too hard. Some players may have personal problems affecting their play or don't want to play hard for the coaches. Some players may just play the bare minimum bc they are good enough and it's an easy check. Not every defemsive player will hit as hard as they can on every single play. That's foolishness so that excuse shouldn't be used again. Sorry for the rant but everytime I hear a fan, media member, or even ex or current players say that it irks me.

Both Payton and Williams have a stipulation in their suspensions that require reinstatement. Goodell is clearly holding that over their heads.
Does this make it a fact or just and "educated" guess?

Remember how Beef was explaining there is no need to keep your "ducks in a row" or no need to deny something that isn't there in the first place without it being there. Same thing Guido. It's an educated guess based on proper logic but it doesn't necessarily make ot a fact or true. You and the others on the Saints side as I said want it to be true so you make a decision or an assumption but its not a fact. I can't imagine a conversation goes like that and if it did then Goodell could be in huge trouble I think. That would be considered some form of blackmail.

"Keep your mouth shut about this lie I'm about to tell in regards to the Saints Payton or Gregg and I will reinstate you"

Really that sounds plausible to you.

Like I said let's stick to the facts.

oh fuck.

It's like thinking you've beaten cancer, then getting a test result back that it's come out of remission.

It has since come to light that Mike Cerullo was that other person and the one that came up with the supposed ledger that has since been questioned for it's accuracy and authenticity. Cerullo also recanted on what he claimed this past April about Vilma and Vitt has denied that he ever verified that a bounty system was in place. After Vitt's denial Goodell said he still has two credible witnesses, if you can call Cerullo credible and Williams has been ordered to keep his mouth shut.

Goodell is reluctant to turn over anything else because he has nothing else. Still, to date, there has been ZERO evidence presented that proves a bounty program was in place.

Waiting till the last minute eh? All is well eh?

If Drew Brees does not have a long-term contract in place by Monday's 4 p.m. ET deadline, the New Orleans Saints quarterback has no plans to sign his franchise tender and report to training camp, according to league and team sources.

NFC South blog

Yasinskas ESPN.com's Pat Yasinskas writes about all things NFC South in his division blog.

• Blog network: NFL Nation

The Saints have offered Brees a contract that would average $19.25 million per year, or slightly more than the $19.2 million the Denver Broncos gave Peyton Manning, sources said. Brees is seeking $20.5 million per year and is using his six years with the Saints to justify his position.

Since signing with New Orleans prior to the 2006 season, Brees has emerged statistically as the league's most prolific passer, accumulated more victories than any starting quarterback and won both a Super Bowl title and MVP during the 2009 season.

Neither side offered any immediate comment. A Saints official acknowledged Brees' position but was hopeful the gap could be bridged between now and July 16.

Any player designated as a franchise player has until Monday's deadline to reach a long-term agreement. After that deadline, the player can only play by signing his franchise tag.
