It has gotten to the point that everyone, even Vilma, is referring to the whole thing as a bounty thing even while denying that any actual bounties ever took place. I have noticed that. We all know this thing was about lawsuits towards the league, so yes this was about player safety. It wasn't about Goodell being omnipotent or on some random power trip. Whomever the author is lost all credibility by saying that. You know I wrote that and I am very pissed because it is apparent what happened. We can all agree this whole thing could have been handled in a much better manner. Goodell made a mess of the whole thing. He created the monster that became known as The Bounty Scandal. Yes, it was in part to use as fodder against the concussion lawsuits, but the punishments were all driven by his delicate ego. I am not alone in this thinking either. The same view has appeared in several articles recently, most of which are posted in this thread. I do think he has an ego but this whole ordeal didn't have anything to do with a power trip. Anybody who thinks that is just upset about the situation. I believe the punishment had everything to do with his ego. Even Tagliabue made reference in his statement that being lied to was part of the job. That was in reference to the eight game suspension originally given to Hargrove, and I would not doubt if it also didn't refer to the Payton suspension, as well. The totally over the top punishments were a message that you don't screw with HIM. He said that Payton's suspension was for lying to HIM. I have no doubt it became a power trip and I also believe that Tags felt the same, yet was a bit more diplomatic when pointing it out in his statement. He is the authoritative figure to them. If you lie or withhold information from a your supervisor or even a cop, then more consequences apply if the truth was told or if the authority was listened to in the first place. While this is true, first, Hargrove never lied to him, second, the punishments laid down were unprecedented and were ultimately overturned (except for the staff and team) because they were excessive. They were obviously ego driven. Every commisioner had been lied to. Tagliabue mentioned that. But only Goodell reacted to that extreme when he "believed" he had been lied to. As I said, it didn't have to do with the "shield", it had to do with "HIM". I use it every day. But, what else would you expect? This thread has been an avenue for posting of bounty related articles and discussion. Of course, I have been posting the vast majority of those articles and have been responding to posts from numerous other members. In fact, I have been called out on numerous occasions when I didn't respond to there post. |
