This doesn't look like a big deal. Just one guy really. They will be a full team when we play them minus Vilma.

Vilma's suspension along with Smith's four games will free up $2.8 million in cap room which should be enough to get the Brees deal done. Vilma hasn't been the same player since his knee surgery two years ago. This year's LB corps will be much better than last year's version just in talent alone. Throw in the fact that they will be running Spag's defense it should be even that much better. Will Smith's four games comes right at the beginning of the season in our easiest stretch and will give the younger DE's a chance to get needed experience.
As flimsy as the published evidence was against the four players that did receive punishment, there was obviously no evidence against the other 23 players or else Goodell would have done more.
There is no reason why the Saints shouldn't repeat as NFC South champs now.

Yup, and with the free agent additions at LB they'll be better than the 2011 version. I feel bad for Vilma, Smith and even more so for Fujita, but I am honestly over-joyed at how this has turned out.

I can understand you being happy about this news. To me, its not a big deal.
But, I disagree about the Saints repeating the South. That isn't going to happen.

I'll give $10,000 to any Falcon who ends the career of Drew Brees.
There...according to some there is nothing wrong with the offer I just made, because everybody does it, and now I'll get a year vacation...Pretty sweet deal eh?

I can understand your thinking that, as well.
I can't wait for this season to get started. I am really expecting something special out of the Saints this year.

But, was it a flippant remark or did you really mean it? I'm assuming that you didn't really mean it. But, since there is more evidence of you saying it than there is of Vilma saying what he is accused of saying, you should get a year's vacation, as well ... without pay. How sweet is that?

The funniest thing, is people saying the punishment is too harsh because players only get an average of 3 years in the NFL.
The whole time I'm yelling at my TV, "He's 30 years old!"

The saints will go undefeated this year in fact they are now stronger than any team in NFL history, so good in fact that they will go 18-0 in a 16 game regular season. All of the infidels will be defeated!!!!!

I have to agree that the penalty was too much. Six games, eight at the most.
Vilma's career is basically over. Punish him but don't take him out of the game for good. This guy operated under his coaches. They are the ones that need to be held most heavily accountable.
The NFL needs to seriously install rules that truly protect its players. Let OL's grab defenders. Let CB's mug WR's for ten yards. The game will be slowed down a little and the concussion rate will drop.
