NFL.com: Potential Saumels signing raises more questions. - monoxide - 04-25-2012 01:19 PM EDIT: I put "Samuels" instead of "Samuel" in the title, my bad. Be prepared for that quite a bit, similar to Chris Rebman, Keith Brookings, Kory Biermann, and of course Aaron Snelling. -By Gregg Rosenthal http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d82894b26/article/potential-samuel-acquisition-raises-more-questions?module=HP11_headline_stack The Falcons are on the verge of acquiring Asante Samuel according to NFL Network's Jason La Canfora, which means they are about to have the most expensive cornerback trio in the league. Possibly in league history. Brent Grimes is set to make over $10 million as the team's franchise player. Samuel is re-doing his contract and will surely take less money in 2012 than his scheduled $9.9 million, but he's still going to be highly paid. Dunta Robinson is in the third year of his six-year, $57 million contract. It was reported earlier this offseason that Robinson passed on a $3 million option bonus and took a $1 base salary pay cut this year in order to guarantee his $5 million salary. So he's not going anywhere. (And apparently the Falcons may have cut him if he didn't make these changes.) A few thoughts on what this all means. 1. The Falcons are adjusting to the new realities of the NFL by going all in at cornerback. The only way to match offenses like the Saints is with a deep group of cornerbacks, while sometimes forgoing a true "strong safety" on the field. More and more teams count their third cornerback as a starter. The Falcons are just making it more obvious. 2. Having cap space is overrated. The Falcons were among the teams tightest to the cap in the league, and yet they will figure out a way to make this move. There is always a way. 3. With that said, Atlanta may need to make a corresponding move like cutting fullback Ovie Mughelli to make room. Michael Turner is overpaid at this stage of his career for his effectiveness, but there has been no indication the Falcons could consider cutting him. RE: NFL.com: Potential Saumels signing raises more questions. - mdrake34 - 04-25-2012 01:33 PM The biggest question is who plays the slot, Samuels or Robinson. Smart money is on Robinson, as he's a big hitter, just took a paycut, and Samuels wasn't happy at the thought of playing the nickel in philthydeplphia last year. Should make for one hell of a camp/preseason battle. RE: NFL.com: Potential Saumels signing raises more questions. - papachaz - 04-25-2012 05:12 PM anybody still worried about not having a first round pick this year? this just made us one kick ass D. RE: NFL.com: Potential Saumels signing raises more questions. - ATLBound - 04-25-2012 05:28 PM And only for a 7th round pick...BOOM RE: NFL.com: Potential Saumels signing raises more questions. - pauliwood - 04-25-2012 05:37 PM Wondering how the Anti-TD faction (mostly on the other board) will try to spin this into a bad move. I don't see how it is possible, but Some of the shit that some Falcons fans say make me question their sanity. RE: NFL.com: Potential Saumels signing raises more questions. - FullMetalFalcon23 - 04-25-2012 06:01 PM One thing is if teams try to do what we didrikson Philly last year by playing 2 wide and a twin tights. With the personnel we have. We aren't affected because we can run the big nickle and still have all three out there with Dunta on the TE or Spoon. We have the LBs which Philly didn't. It's a very positive situation on paper. I think the person that makes all of this work is Nolan though. He is better and more experienced than the guy who was calling the shots in Philly in my opinion. His track record shows that. The successor this D will be on Nolan. Whilst I would have been excited. I would not have been confident if BVG was in charge. It would just be more players chasing after themselves out there. I think the most "negative" aspect of it is simply that to free up space, we'll likely take away from the offense. Personally, I would have been happier to see a LT come in for this, and cut Mughelli/Baker/Turner to free up the space, under the assumption that with a good line, we don't have to have a 3M FB and 7M HB. However, I'm not going to complain about them finally addressing the nickel position, while giving themselves the ability to move on from Dunta next year, or not be in too big of a mess if Grimes doesn't sign. RE: NFL.com: Potential Saumels signing raises more questions. - ATLBound - 04-25-2012 06:33 PM Well bc of the fact that Dunta restructured and didn't take the $3M option, then the rest of his contract is guaranteed so I don't think he is going anywhere. I may be wrong but I think I read that correctly. RE: NFL.com: Potential Saumels signing raises more questions. - Drathdon - 04-25-2012 09:50 PM I still cannot fathom why so many are advocating to cut Turner? No way is that a good move, even with the cap being tight. I bet Matty signs a deal to make this year cheap, and we lock him down. Would be a perfect end to this amazing trade. |
