YARDS AFTER THE CATCH - Tandy - 09-25-2010 09:11 AM

I am always interested in how we are doing in YAC, which I feel has a lot to do with time in the pocket for the receivers to get separated and is a good measure of how your receivers are doing after the catch.

I'll be ranking them each week by YAC PER COMPLETION (this is the YTD number).

To keep it formatted - I'll just update the picture each week.
UPDATED THROUGH WEEK 8

KEY

YAC = YARDS AFTER THE CATCH
YIA = YARDS IN THE AIR
GM = PER GAME
Comp = COMPLETIONS
GREY HIGHLIGHT ON NAME MEANS THEY HAVE TAKEN THEIR BYE WEEK

By request - I'm also including a chart sorted by Yards In The Air Per Reception

Awesome! Thanks, Tandy

Edit: I meant awesome that you're taking the time to do this...just want to clarify.

I decided to track this statistic but I needed a gauge to go by, so I went back to last year and took the leaders in yardage and I will track them as well.

Now, it may not seem fair to compare our team to the best in the league - but if you want to be the best - you have to measure up to the best - so that's who I chose. I did throw the Ravens in because we seem to be gauged against them all the time - so before people start asking - I'm just going to throw it in. I'll be ranking them each week by Total YAC (this is the number for the year).

I really like this topic, and it's something I've thought on for a while also. I do have one concern though, and that is the teams you're picking in comparison, and it has to do with offensive style. We're more of a rushing team than any of those teams, and our passing game relies heavily on comeback routes. I think it would be better to show us in comparison to more balanced teams, or run-first offenses. Here is where each team ranks in rushing in the NFL:

Patriots: 24th(85.0 YPG)
Saints: 31st(64.5 YPG)
Colts: 18th(102 YPG)
Chargers: 6th (130 YPG)
Cowboys: 28th (69.5 YPG)
Texans: 1st(157.5 YPG)
Falcons: 4th (139.5 YPG)
Ravens: 26th (79 YPG)
Packers: 14th (111.5)

Also keep in mind that 257 of the Texans 315 rushing yards came in week 1. This would also suggest that since the Texans only had 107 yards passing in week 1, most of their YAC came in week 2.

I just think that it would be better to show a complete listing of teams in YAC to see where we stand overall. I'd be glad to help you out with this if you'd like.

If you want to add the other teams - I'd be glad to include them.

The problem is that they don't store them by team that I can find. You have to go to Yahoo Sports - look up each teams stats - and add up the YAC by the receivers for each team.

If someone knows where YAC by team is stored - I would be happy to include them all myself.

On the other hand - I'm including a per completion number - which would account for more passing completions by team.

If you guys want to switch a couple of the teams - I can do that easily though.

One thing I'll point out is that there will always be games which are more passing or more rushing depending on the defense the team is facing - which is why I'm giving a YTD number - Houston's numbers will average out over time.

Oh I know, it's just with the Texans from week 1 to week 2 they went one extreme to another.

I found this which has the top 50 in YAC.

I really like the YIA stat you've got listed too. Definitely puts the 'prolific' passing offense in perspective. No one questions the Colts offense, but I had no idea that the Saints and Patriots relied so much on YAC.

Tandy more great research and information from you. Thanks for doing this!

RE: YARDS AFTER THE CATCH - Oldfan - 09-25-2010 10:32 AM

Thanks for doing the leg work, Tandy. For me, YAC is one of the accomplishments that elevates good offenses to great. If we could improve that one stat, I feel we could become one of the elite offenses.

RE: YARDS AFTER THE CATCH - caver50 - 09-25-2010 10:54 AM

YAC are often the product of play calling. I would like to see more passes to receivers on the run. To me Jerry Rice was a prime example of a YAC. So many times Montanna would hit Jerry on that short crossing pattern for big yards. I would love to see the Falcons adopt more plays like that.

Maybe - where did you get it? Does it include total yards and completions?
