Dimitroff: Falcons to franchise Grimes. - monoxide - 03-02-2012 10:44 AM
straight from TD's mouth. I'm not up to date on how much the franchise tag will cost, but I can't imagine it's cheap with the recent fad of overpaying cornerbacks.

Apparently it is 10.8 million. Sounds like Abe won't be back There will be some restructures and extensions interesting to see what the cap figure will be. But at end of it all you know we will bring in at least one or 2 FAs between o and D. I think we might lose Weems and Douglas Kone should get a shot on the roster.

We still have around $21M to work with not including any restructuring or possible trades.
Abe is gone, I'm pretty certain. Guy got on the radio with those 2 idiot Stews and said he's "not a Falcon, he's a free agent". Plus he said the top 5 DEs are averaging $12M and he's been just as good as them so he wants top 5 pay. Which is laughable. The guy is tops in the league in overall pressures and QB hits, but he can't finish to get sacks and he simply disappears way too often in too many games. His numbers are high because he goes berserk in a few games against bad teams. So I think Abe is gone.
Grimes was our best defensive player, period. Franchising him at the very least was a must do. He's going to make more than he's ever made and then if he plays well hell get a 3 or 4 year done later in the season. I'd rather it be this way anyways since it'll give him more motivation to play for something and not chance getting complacent with a fat contract. He's worth the $10.2m cap hit IMO, at least for this year.
Lofton is a toss up at this point and depends on what we get or do in FA at other positions. Only being a 2-down run stopper who's bad bad in pass coverage makes me indifferent. He's not a must re-sign IMO.

And of course Grimes has said he will not sign the franchise tag.

I read that too. probably his crazy wife spewing nonsense in his ear.

Well if he doesn't sign... Then seriously fuck him. I'm not being emotional but there is a line with bull shit. I don't think that grimes is anywhere near that kind of ass hole. There really is no reason to not sign a tender of that size. Frankly I am at the point where if the bull goes on any longer I won't care less.
And if it comes to it we move on. Grimes is not a cancer but his contract situation could become Toxic.

Posturing on Grimes part im sure. He will wait to sign his tender until the last second, probably miss OTA's. In the end he will be in camp. He has to show up huge this year to make that cheddar next year....

If he doesn't then he sends his career down the toilet and that big pay day goes too.

Coming back to another thing in this saga if Miko Grimes was Sportafreak. Some of her comments about other players were pretty harsh. I mean they ain't gonna bat an eye lid but at the same time she is essentially someone inside the organisation through her association to Brent. Any wind of that from the Falcons FO is likely to be stomped out because Mike Smith and co don't want that environment in the locker room.
Anyway I hope Grimes signs and plays. We don't want the Drama of a tender hold out

Since we seem to rarely use the franchise tag (this was just the 2nd time we've used it), I decided to look up more info on it. Turns out, there are 2 types of franchise tag.
An exclusive franchise player tag means the club has full negotiating rights with that player and the player can't talk with another club. The team must offer a player a 20 percent increase over his previous year's salary, an equal to or greater salary than the average of the five highest paid players at that player's position at the conclusion of the restricted free agent signing period (April 15) or an equal to or greater salary than the average of the five highest paid players at that players position the previous year, whichever total is greatest.
Non-exclusive franchise players may listen to offers from other teams, but the player's original team has the right to match any offer. If the original team allows a non-exclusive free agent to sign elsewhere, it gets two first-round draft choices as compensation. The conditions for designating this tag are the same as designating an exclusive franchise player, except the team does not have to match the average salary of the top five position players at the tagged player's position at the end of the restricted free agent signing period. Hypothetically, this type of franchise player would be cheaper to keep than an exclusive one. A non-exclusive franchise player may negotiate with other NFL teams, but if he signs an offer sheet from another team, the original team has a right to match the terms of that offer, or if it does not match the offer and thus loses the player, is entitled to receive two first-round draft picks as compensation.
Most likely, this will be a non-exclusive franchise tag, which will keep teams away. However, just think if he does end up leaving anyway. I'd be willing to trade Grimes for 2 first round picks any day of the week.
