Owens could flourish under Mike Nolan - evo - 01-20-2012 01:15 PM

I understand the hate on the guy lately, but i remember back in 2009 he had a pretty good year as a rookie, he shows flashes of having a good speed, sure tackler, and decent coverage skill . Then after that year he had a back injury, being moved to play inside and was never the same.

From what i've seen, Owens seems like a straight shoot type of guy, he got a physical playing style and more capable of covering the outside receiver due to his strength in speed. So when he was being asked to play the slot, we all clearly saw that he was very uncomfortable.

With the hiring of Mike Nolan, and his aggressive defense, I can see Owens being benefit from it. Nolan will probably ask our CBs to play more bump and run coverage which play in Owens strength.

All im saying is just dont count the guy out yet. He might surprise a lot of people next year.

well he definitely showed his speed. twice he ran down KR specialists to keep them out of the endzone. i was definitely on his band wagon after the end of his rookie year. The last couple games he played CB pretty decent in grimes absence.

he definitely doesn't need to be moved back inside though. this offseason is going to be very interesting to watch. esp the next couple of months with FA and the draft.

i think his work on the outside made grimes expendable holla.

I remember he shut down TO once.

Pair him up with Dunta, and we got ourselves a heck of a physical duo CB.

But honestly, i dont see us letting Grimes go though. Understand that we have to pay a high price for him, but its not like Dunta or any other CB is playing good.

Dude should have been called for PI at least twice against the Giants. He's got horrible technique and is either late on coverage or very early. He's average at tackling and hitting as well. His only redeeming quality is that he's fast as fuck.

I think you guys are smokin crack about Owens being an asset.

Owens is in, what? His fourth year? Unless he can break his bad habits in when it comes to coverage and unless Nolan can un-teach him what our coaching staff has already taught him, I don't see Owens doing any major turnaround in his play anytime soon.

I think u r failing to see the progress. In that Giants game and a few before he showed progress in his 3rd season, which has always been the season for rookies to get it.

Not all rookies get it immediately. Grimes didn't and a lot of people wanted to give up on him as well.

Again, he only made what appeared to be 2 decent plays in that Giants game and both of them absolutely should have been called PI. If they would have been called properly, he would have looked just as shitty as he did against GB last playoffs when he did the same damn things but just got called.

I saw him get to the receivers early and drape all over their backs plain as day. I'm sure several others here saw it too. He's going to get called for PI more times than not in critical situations like that and not be so lucky.

And if he's doing it in the last game of the season, no I don't see the progression.

So 2 plays that you figured to be PI determines his whole progress?
