because david garrard is a shit quarterback same with gabbert, the guy can only work with what he's given. he had one piece to work with MJD and look at the success that cat had with what was around him... NFL is all about matchups and being able to pray to jesus.

Mike Smith is now Mark Richt. This is a terrible hire. I don't care what talent Koetter had. You don't have the #32 ranked anything and get another OC job for a NFL team, you go back to college or you get to be a positional coach.
I am really let down by this. I will always support the Falcons, but I will be going into the next season with no expectations, except that we will probably not improve and that this will be Mike Smith's last year.

What did he have to work with? Garrard? Gabbert?

That may be true, but even if it is it is just a reason for the failure, it says nothing about his chance of success with other players. I'd just feel much better if the argument was "look what he did with XYZ" instead of "The players are the reasons for his lack of success". Unless the argument is that the coach doesn't matter, it's all players, in which case why is it we were unhappy with Mularkey?

he took horrible talent and made them middle of the road, his offenses over achieved for him. he also got rings with boise.

Alex Smith sucked too, and then the 49ers hired Harbaugh.
If Koetter was even remotely worth a shit, he would have done the same with Garrard and Gabbert.
Sometimes a shit hire is just a shit hire, and this certainly qualifies in my opinion. No idea how the fanbase is supposed to get excited about a hire like this.
