YAY I WAS WRONG!!!!!!!! YAY I WAS WRONG!!!!!!!!!!

so glad that i was wrong in thinking that they'd put baker back at starter. svitek has done a real good job, and he deserves the chance to be at one spot and be able to focus just on that spot. hoping we see some Baker at right guard, according to PY Hawley had his worst start against Minny this past week

Svitek is our new LT. If he plays at this high of a level for the rest of the season, he may eliminate the need to go OT this draft. That'd be good on so many levels. Stuff T-Rex arms in at OG and continue to develop our youth and we should be fine at OL without having to make a move. Gotta love the prospect of that being a possibility.

Svitek’s Strong Streak

Will Svitek continues to quietly do his job, holding a string of talented pass rushers to no sacks in five straight games. The left tackle’s performance continued against the Vikings when he shut Jared Allen, who had 13.5 sacks coming into Sunday, out of the game. The recent surge by Matt Ryan isn’t a coincidence. Svitek has given Ryan the time needed to do his damage.

As the saying goes, if you’re not hearing an offensive lineman’s name, that probably means he’s doing his job.

Falcons left tackle Will Svitek is doing his job about as well as anyone at the position right now, when he began starting in Week 7 against the Detroit Lions. Since then, he’s faced the likes of Will Smith, Kyle Vanden Bosch and Dwight Freeney, to name a few, and hasn’t allowed a sack yet.

Svitek’s biggest test came in last Sunday’s win over the Minnesota Vikings when he lined up opposite Jared Allen, a pass rusher who 13.5 sacks are second in the NFL this season. His 96.5 sacks since he began playing in 2004 are the most in the league in that time span.

The season began with Sam Baker at the position, but an injury forced him from the lineup in Week 7. Since, Svitek has filled in admirably, creating a situation that Atlanta’s coaching staff has had to monitor closely. Baker was available to play last week, but the Falcons continued to ride the hot hand of Svitek.

“In terms of putting together our 46-man roster each and every week, we’re going to put our positions as open competition each and every week,” head coach Mike Smith said. “Will has been in there and has played well. In our mind, he gave us the best opportunity to win this week. Next week, it could be something that’s completely different. That’s the way that we approach it.”

Atlanta’s left tackle’s string of games without allowing a sack continued on Sunday, but his impressive play doesn’t just begin and end with not allowing Allen to bring down Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan.

He didn’t allow Allen, arguably the sack artist in the game, to touch the franchise QB.

According to Pro Football Focus, Allen, in addition to earning zero sacks, wasn’t able to notch a quarterback hit or pressure.

It was the first time since Week 5 of last season that Allen was completely shut out of the measurable stats of a pass rusher. Svitek is in rare company, PFF notes. That week Allen was facing the New York Jets’ left tackle D’Brickashaw Ferguson, a two-time Pro Bowler.

A performance like that is one of the major reasons behind Ryan’s game on Sunday, perhaps the best of this season and one of the best in his young career. His 128.2 passer rating is the fourth-highest of his career and his 79.4 completion percentage is the second-highest of his career and puts him as the sixth-best mark in franchise history.

At least we can say, others have noticed and Smith and Co would look mighty stupid putting Baker back in after the way Svitek has played. So unless Smitty is as stupid as some of the Trolls say, we have our new LT for this a future years 2-5 range.

It is sweet watching what Ryan can do when he has time.

We know Will Svitek is our LT the rest of the year.... The new question is... Do you think we have found our new LT for the future (next 5 or so years) or do you still see LT as a need ?

We found FA gems in Clabo and Dahl...

PFF on Jared Allen vs Svitek

Quiet day at the office

Svitek has done an outstanding job IMO, with that being said in the next 3 or 4 drafts if someone falls to us that really shouldn't have, then we pick them. But i no longer consider LT our worst position

Svitek has earned the LT spot IMO, but if someone falls that shouldn't have we pick them, LT IMO isn't our biggest need any longer.

Svitek has been great so far. I don't see Baker coming in unless he somehow forgets how great of a job he's been doing.

RE: Will Svitek - juraitwaluzka - 12-01-2011 12:22 AM

Sam Baker could come in to spell Svitek when there's less than 2 minutes to go in the game, the Texans have no timeouts left and we are in victory formation. I truly believe he can achieve this without messing up, but not much else.

Oline depth is important and Sam remains a valuable part of this tteam. Svitek is playing great, but he too will get dinged and need relief someday.

Ryan has been having regular sessions with his therapist to prepare himself for that eventuality. He will probably be ok as his therapist specializes in post traumatic stress disorder.

Smart post. I think that Svitek has earned the starting spot at LT and I think that he will be there to stay for a while. I would allow Baker to sit and heal for the rest of this season. Next season, I would consider moving him to RT and moving Clabo to RG (his natural position).

Here is what the OL would look like:

LT: Svitek , Baker
LG: Blalock , Jackson
OC: McClure , Hawley
RG: Clabo , Johnson
RT: Baker , Draft pick

Comments:

Assuming Baker's back gets right, he would make a very solid RT. Despite what many say, he is a good run blocker (when healthy) and can handle LDE's as well as Clabo. I think that TD needs to find a RT prospect in the later rounds of this draft to develop an eventual successor. RT's are pretty easy to find, so TD shouldn't have much of a problem. I don't know about Valdez and Reynolds, apparently, they have not done enough to warrant optimism.

McClure's contract is up this season, but I am not counting out a return. His name is first because I think that he will still be the better OC. Of course, Hawley might be the better player by training camp....time will tell.

I like Clabo at RG. I know that he is a good RT, but I think that he is a budding pro-bowler at RG. Yes, he made the pro bowl last season at RT, but I think that was a fluke situation. Clabo could be a great RG for many seasons. I see him as a possible top NFL OG for the rest of his career. Our interior OL has been a problem and I think that Clablo is the solution. If we have to play Hawley at OC, having a pair of big, experienced OG's at his side would be a great plus.

There you have it. This is a relatively "cheap" way of setting a high quality OL for several years. I think that Ryan would feel comfortable with this proposed line and be able to distribute the ball very effectively.
