Per a league source, that new five-year, $90 million contract was given to Manning without the quarterback having to pass a physical. In other words, he got $20 million to sign, and the Colts didn’t insist on obtaining medical clearance that he can play before giving it to him.

They also took him off the PUP list right before he had this new surgery, so that means his salary this year is paid.

Basically, Peyton will still get almost $50 million, at least, even if he never plays another down, and all of it having never played a down. If this surgery means he is done, which is possible according to some worst-case scenarios, he still will make major bank off what seems a really bad front office move.

Wow. Just wow.

He earned $98 million on his last contract. So he's alright.
