Observations vs. Jags - Beef - 08-19-2011 11:53 PM

First of all, the outcome is irrelevant. The first team defense played awesome and held them to 6 points (2 field goals). That kick return fumble after the half by Antone Smith wouldn't have happened with the first team and it may be his undoing.

Why is Quizz not in their with the 1st team yet? He ran freaking great with the seconds after the half. He looks like he knows the plays. I hope they move him up after such a great performance tonight. He's a perfect CoP guy and I can't imagine how much better he could be behind the starting OL and Ovie.

Franks is an enigma. He has 2-3 good plays then 2-3 plays where he looks horrible. I think he played well at the nickel and not so good on the outside though. He missed a couple tackles but also made several really good ones.

Owens just played very average all around. He'd let a receiver catch the ball but then he'd get a quick tackle right away. Nothing special anywhere but nothing major given up either. Although he did miss a couple tackles.

Ryan's 7/15 is deceiving because he through 4 balls out of bounds to avoid sacks. He will get better as more games are played. He's still playing good, but he'll be great before it's over. I truely believe we're not showing all our cards yet and Ryan is being overly cautious. Roddy has gotten 1 pass in 4 quarters and that's not going to be the norm. Julio only got 1 pass from Ryan tonight and he under-threw it because Julio is so damn fast. That TD to HD was a thing of beauty. HD can fly.

Our receiving corps looks ridiculously deep. Roddy, Julio, HD, Meier, Weems, and Gonzo all seem to be catching the hell out of the ball. HD and Weems are stepping the heck up too. Although Gonzo just looks noticibly slower, but he still has great hands and can get open. Meier is going to be outstanding. Weems may just surprise a lot of people this year.

Turner and Snelling are a great tandum and get their yards as usual. But I think it gets even better once we really open things up and also get Quizz in there. Like I said, I think we're holding back and not showing hardly any of our cards.

So far, I think Babineaux is the only starting DL to get a sack between the 2 games, which is frustrating. But I really think that will change once Edwards starts playing. Kroy seems to be in the QB's face every damn play but just like last year, he's a half a second too late and the ball is gone just before he gets the sack. Jerry was back in there in the second half and he got a sack against the seconds. Would have been nice to see it against the firsts though. Bah, gotta wait for Edwards to really see how this DL pans out.

DeCoud and Moore played as expected, very solid. DeCoud got a couple TFL's and Moore was making plays all over the place.

Grimes is incredible. He's getting closer and closer to being a shut-down guy. Not having Dunta in there you could really see a difference in our coverage though because Owens and Franks are simply average at best.

I still hate that fucking soft zone 10 yards our CB's give. Everytime they are in that coverage, the other team pecks away at us with 7 yard catches. The second team defense played man/press coverage for the majority of the 3rd quarter and it just looked so much more effective.

Does anyone know if Cliff Mathews is OK? Up until he got injured, he was killing the OL's he was facing and in McCown's face nearly every play.

Things I saw that I didn't like/need working on

1. The nickel spot still has questions.
2. Still have to learn proper tackling techniques. You would think professional football players know how to properly tackle/bring down the QB.
3. Yeah, that 7-10 yard off the WR is puzzling and stupid.
4. STeams need to tighten up a bit but played well overall
5. The OL was not good in pass blocking

Oh yeah, can we seriously stop with the roll outs?!

Or word of the advice to Mularkey. If you're gonna roll out, try telling the QB to pump fake, hope the CB/S bites, and tell the WR to do a streak....It may work since teams know our roll out play is both the TE and WRs running to the right or vice versa

Matthews tweeted 'Im okay'.

FWIW

This was the major one to me. Our OL was getting thrown around like a bunch of rag dolls out there. It was pitiful.
