DR: "i have to play better" - bF™ - 08-05-2011 03:42 PM By Pat Yasinskas FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- There’s been a lot of talk recently about how free-agent defensive end Ray Edwards and rookie wide receiver Julio Jones might be the missing pieces for the Atlanta Falcons. That talk is all legitimate and Jones and Edwards could end up being the guys who put the Falcons over the top. But I can’t help but think back to right about this time last year when all the talk was about how cornerback Dunta Robinson, who had been signed as a free agent from Houston, was all the Falcons needed to put them in the Super Bowl. We all know that didn’t happen. The Falcons went 13-3 in the regular season, but got bounced from the playoffs by Green Bay. Critics will point to Robinson’s huge contract and one interception last season and declare him a bust. The Falcons didn’t see it quite that way. They thought Robinson had a solid season, didn’t get beat too often, and his presence was a major reason why teams threw at Brent Grimes, who grabbed five interceptions and a spot in the Pro Bowl. But what did Robinson think about his season? I asked him that on Thursday. “I’m never content with the things that I do,’’ Robinson said. “My expectations are so high for myself because I’m a perfectionist. When I give up a play, I’m like, 'wow, I’m not supposed to do that.' The ultimate goal was to win the Super Bowl. If we don’t do that, then I haven’t done what I’m supposed to do. They brought me in here for a reason and that reason is to win the world championship. If we don’t do that, then I understand I’ve got to play a little bit better.’’ RE: DR: "i have to play better" - Penumbra - 08-05-2011 04:08 PM It's true that Dunta was the reason for Grimes being "picked on" so to say. And Dunta did get picked on himself if we recall, sometimes. But overall Dunta played pretty good coverage and hey ya'll,...one day, nah never,...people will stop complaining about the size of cotracts. It's like children in a sandbox. he's not worth the money. Again, we have a billionaire owner. He can spend his money anyway he wants. If anyone calls Dunta a bust, imo, they are a maleducated football nut. Yasinkas suggested Dunta is a bust by writing what he wrote. He sluffed it off on others but he has been a critic of the signing and the amount of money last preseason. Here's the difference between today's Falcons and yesterday's Falcons. In the past we'd hear players and coaches say they wanna make the playoffs and then go from there. Today we hear player's like Dunta, guys like Dimitroff and Smith and Blank as well, talking championship. RE: DR: "i have to play better" - phalcon phil - 08-05-2011 09:51 PM Im one of the ones that didn't like overpaying for him but I'd rather overpay for quality talent than get a good bargain on a mediocre or average player. DRob may not have deserved all that money but he's better than a lot of other options. RE: DR: "i have to play better" - The Falcon Jedi - 08-05-2011 10:50 PM Dunta is OK. He's not a shutdown CB, nothing GREAT. But he is Above Average. I think we paid too much for what he brings, but it is what it is. We definitely could be a lot worse off. RE: DR: "i have to play better" - phocis850 - 08-05-2011 10:53 PM At Friday Night Lights I saw Franks as the best corner. Grimes and Dunta look rusty. RE: DR: "i have to play better" - mcsupersport - 08-05-2011 11:02 PM DRop shouldn't have been but I could easily understand Grimes being rusty because it is only the second day he could practice. DRob had better watch out or his contract will be shortened by the young guys, can you imagine how he would feel/react to either being cut or made a backup in another year or two? RE: DR: "i have to play better" - g-dawg - 08-05-2011 11:06 PM Dunta is a slightly better than average starting CB in the NFL who is being paid like a "top 5" CB.......its not my money - but Dunta needs to do a lot better to earn his keep. RE: DR: "i have to play better" - The Falcon Jedi - 08-06-2011 01:04 AM Dunta is a very physical CB. I think he would probably make a better FS than a CB, but it is what it is RE: DR: "i have to play better" - Timbo - 08-06-2011 11:31 AM (08-05-2011 11:06 PM)g-dawg Wrote: Dunta is a slightly better than average starting CB in the NFL who is being paid like a "top 5" CB.......its not my money - but Dunta needs to do a lot better to earn his keep. Agreed. Also, the money does matter regardless if the Falcons have a billionaire owner. The salary cap does not allow for too many mistakes in regards to big money contracts. RE: DR: "i have to play better" - atljbo - 08-06-2011 12:18 PM The guy ranked around the 30th best CB last year... Thats in the top 1/2... I think he will continue to improve (since he should feel more comfortable in our scheme) ... If Franks can show that he is ready... On 3rd downs i would take advantage of Robinson aggressiveness and line him up at NB (Woodson style) ... Blitz him from that NM position (he was a good blitzer in houston when they allowed him) ... He is also a good tackler if they decide to run the ball. In our base D play him on the island and on our sub packages let him play some NB. But it was no doubt that our D improved last year after signing Robinson |
