Charles Clay grew up dreaming about getting drafted by an NFL team then living the good life.

Clay achieved the first half of that dream when the Miami Dolphins selected him in the sixth round of the 2011 NFL Draft in April. The "living the good life" part, however? Not even close.

With the NFL work stoppage past the three-month mark and no finish line in sight, Clay -- like other rookies -- lives in financial limbo.

To pay his bills, Clay has taken up day labor type work with a company called LPD, which has him cutting grass at oil wells and doing other various odd jobs, according to the South Florida Sun Sentinel.

“It’s hard times right now,” said Clay, who starred collegiately at Tulsa. ”I’m working little small jobs and things to get money. Not getting an income right now is tough, especially when I’m trying to have a facility to workout in, and have to pay for things like [trainers].

Clay concedes the pay for his side work is minimal, but it's better than the flat-broke alternative.

“It’s tough, but at the same time you’ve got to get by somehow,” said Clay. “I’m pretty sure there are other guys doing the same thing. Nobody is getting any kind of income. You have to get money some kind of way.”

And in a reality that puts Clay's situation in perspective, he admits he hasn't taken part in the Dolphins' players-only workouts in Florida because he can't afford the trip.

”At one point I actually thought about going down there, but when you go down there and you have no source of income I’d just be down there," he said. "You also take risks of being injured."

Even if there wasn't a lockout, would these guys be getting paid already anyways? TC doesn't normally start until mid July and I thought NFL players only get paychecks when TC starts through the last game of the season and that's it.

And I don't think 6th round picks are getting any signing bonuses. Most rookies get set up in team dorms a week or so prior to TC and they simply make due until then.

Getting tired of reading these agenda driven pity pieces.

last year as a 7th round pick Shann Schillinger received a $125,000 signing bonus ...

Most of the stories about players in the league already borrowing money... I dont get that... But for rookies... The ones that dont get the endorsement deal... They dont have any money...

If the guy has bills to pay, he mans up and works to pay the bills.

Mowing Grass or selling Insurance,, what ever it takes.

ok so am i assuming too much to think he's graduated already? what about something along the lines of whatever took in college?

gotta agree with Karst though, at least he's manning up and working

instead of making a half million dollar loan at a ridiculous interest rate.

If it was make or break, I would mow grass! However being a businessman I would low ball a bid to a business complex for a contract for 100g and hire some one for $25,000 per year to do the work and then go for an apartment complex bid.

But then, that's just me.Big Grin

He and others are probably doing the right thing. From the business standpoint, there are a lot of college grads that are capable and willing to low ball just to get a job in this economy. Who is going to spend the money and time to train someone who you are more than likely not going to have as an employee for long?

Hiring some to labor for you also isn't so easy by the time you get the bids, equipment etc. You still have to do it right, your reputation will follow you later.

Road Hog, When you have someone doing a great job you give him a 5% pay raise per year and a Christmas bonus. I forgot to mention, if you do a good job the the junior VP in charge of facilities will be happy with a 5 to 10% increase in the contract, one less thing for him to worry about, which gives you more money and keeps your employee very happy.

Now you get another contract and hire another employee to work with the first one and he tells the new guy what a good position this is. Now each job takes less time, once a week cut, edge and blow and twice a year trim the shrubs or trees'

And do it again!

Gee, you make $300,000 and they make 30k to 35k with raises and bonuses and everybody is happy!

I've done that and sold the business. It works.

This business advice is free if you are a Falcons fan!

Sometimes I prostitute myself to pay bills.
