Casey Matthews - FullMetalFalcon23 - 02-28-2011 07:29 AM

I'm interested in him, as interested as I was in his brother Clay coming out of USC, he is not has highly rated now coming out as Clay was but the blueprint in him to be a great Linebacker in his own mold is there. I do wonder if he may be someone we would consider drafting in the 3rd round or so.

Casey Matthews, ILB, Oregon
There were questions regarding Oregon's defense early in the 2010 season, but the Ducks have remained undefeated in large part due to the overlooked defense. Casey Matthews is the leader of the Ducks defense. The 6'2, 235 pound linebacker does a little bit of most things and a lot of everything else. Matthews started making an impact as a true freshman in 2007. He played in the first 11 games of the season and even earned a start before missing a couple of games with a shoulder injury. He only tallied 18.0 tackles during that season, but 4.0 of those were for a loss.
Matthews stepped up his game as a sophomore, but still started the season coming in off of the bench. By November he was a staple in the starting lineup and he ended the season ranking sixth on the team with 67 tackles and added 13.0 tackles-for-loss. Matthews kept getting better as an upperclassman. In 2009 he totaled 81 tackles and became much more versatile and spent less time getting in the backfield and more time dropping back in coverage. In 2010, Matthews has done everything. Through the regular season Matthews not only leads the team with 73 tackles, but has also added 8.5 tackles-for-loss, 3.0 sacks, three interceptions and five passes defended.

With Oregon heading to the BCS National Championship game, Matthews will get one more shot to show the nation that the Ducks are about more than just their explosive offense. Matthews is arguably one of the top five inside linebackers in this class, but that will not likely be enough to get him drafted in the first three rounds.

If he comes across as a LB that can play in multiple positions if we were to give him a private work out I think a pairing of himself and spoon in the future would be quite fruitful for the Falcons. I am not saying that it is written in stone that he will duplicate what Clay has done, but when looking for someone who can play football and do it well. I think Casey's resume does well to speak for itself.

What do you all think?

Worth a look, good blood line.

His bloodline will probably cause him to shoot up the draft boards. Draft Scout has him as a 5th rounder, so I'd take him with a 4th.

Sounds about right.

With the way the Matthews family performs in the NFL I'd draft one of their sisters.

So damn funny. I wonder is all the Matthews women have short hair cuts, because the recent men in the family have all got long Conan/ He-man locks

I have been a big fan of Casey Matthews for 2 years now. I wish that TD would draft him even though he is projected as a ILB but I believe that he would be a good replacement for Stephen Nicholas if he were to leave through free agency. He is not a sack master like his brother Clay but he is much better run stopper and coverage LB than him in my opinion. I believe that he could switch to a 4-3 olb for us easily because the job of a 3-4 inside linebacker is not that much different than a 4-3 outside linebacker.

He's going to be an early to mid 2nd rounder I think. Not sure that he's worth it for our team.

They said the same thing about Clay before he was drafted
