Matt Ryan's Three Year Progress Report - cooperbh - 02-08-2011 08:56 AM

I figured this place could use a break from all the A-Rod nut-hugging.

What follows is a statistical comparison between Ryan and various other QBs at the same point in their careers. Every compared player listed is either already in the HOF or surely will be once they become eligible. I made sure to include only those QBs who played the majority of their careers in the passer-friendly modern era to ensure an apples-to-apples juxtaposition.

Top 5 in nine out of twelve categories. I gotta say, I'm pretty damn impressed with what our young QB has accomplished thus far in his brief career. I know certain posters have already written Ryan off as a player who has peaked in favor of the Super Bowl MVP du jour, but I count myself among those who believe Ryan will only get better as he enters his prime years - resulting in those playoff wins currently missing from his already impressive resume.

Looking forward to the next three, Matty.

You nut hug some special..Someone that rises to occasion when (BIG) games matter most ..You drop your jaw when you see the next ALL TIME GREAT player in making ..thats when you nut hug....That is when you are witnessing something special or close to perfection as a PLAYER can be

3rd year starting numbers up the wahhhhhhh zooooooooooo

Helped lead is team to a Super Bowl in one of best QB performances of all time throughout playoffs...

age 28 years old

Super Bowl MVP ..

and the saddest of it all Sad ( DESTROYED THE FALCONS IN GEORGIA DOME )

While Matty Ice aka playoff choker was throwing ints pick 6/ dumb decisions and throwing ducks in end zone..

Aaron Rodgers is special...maybe Packers made a dumb decision sitting him so long but I guess our fan base can use that as a crutch as to why he is better then our QB most cant come to grips...so they will use the BETTER WR CORPS/6 year starting excuse..

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now before this comes out like I hate Ryan ..Kid has been a winner just like Vick was a winner for this franchise while I saw flaws in Vick game from lack of work ethic to his passing , I see flaws in Ryan game..

Has Ryan been great for this franchise.........YES
Has Ryan been a winner and a great teammate ..............YES
Is Ryan on the level of the great Aaron Rodgers...........not even close
Can Ryan win a super bowl with this offensive scheme.......I have my doubts.

This will be going into year 4 in process and sooner or later our QB is going to have to step up in playoff time..He really has been a disappointment
in games that matter most ...

RE: Matt Ryan's Three Year Progress Report - RFlagg - 02-08-2011 09:57 AM

I'd only add 2 things to this:

Games Played
Manning: 48
Montana: 47
Ryan: 46
Moon: 45
Kelly: 44
Marino: 43
Elway: 42
Aikman: 38
Favre: 33
Brady: 32
Brees: 28
Young: 27

Games Started
Manning: 48
Ryan: 46
Moon: 45
Kelly: 44
Marino: 41
Elway: 40
Aikman: 38
Brady: 30
Favre: 29
Brees: 27
Montana: 24
Young: 22

But a great post none the less.

Guys, just ignore Swift's posts if you don't like what he has to say. I can't allow members to simply ignore the rules because Swift constantly focuses on the negative. He's not breaking the rules. He makes some good points. Just ignore him if you don't like it.

The one issue I do have with Swift is the fact that he feels the need to constantly compare Ryan to Rodgers. It's not really the kind of thing that needs to be revisited over and over again.

Matt Ryan isn't as good as Aaron Rodgers, and he probably never will be. But guess what? Aaron Rodgers is the highest rated passer of all time and the reigning Super Bowl MVP and his stock is still going up. There are very few guys who have ever played who have been as good as he is right now.

But he isn't our QB. Matt Ryan is our QB, for better and for worse, and the better is pretty damn good. I think it this point people just need to accept it, and I'm not saying that people should never criticize Matt Ryan, but keep it to things that are relevant, like whether or not he is putting the work in, not whether or not he can make the throws that Aaron Rodgers can make.

Most guys in this league can't make the throws that Aaron Rodgers can make.

thats fair man ..

I love Ryan I truly do but I think our fan base is falling into that Vick (zone) of thinking the QB can do no wrong and all the excuses are starting to come out that what pisses me off. I will say 80% of our fan base actually believes that Matt Ryan is a top 5 QB and is better then Rodgers ..I wish some of our fans come back to a place we like calling being REALISTIC ..

1)OC
2)Lack of wrs
3)oline
4)etc

Now do I think Ryan would be better suited for another scheme.......YES
do i think Ryan needs a play making wr in slot........YES

but with that being said we do have a pro bowl wr, rb, te ..That is plenty to be successful and be successful when it matters most.

If I had to Rate NFL QBS in this league

1)Brady.........
2)Manning......(cant help the fact that he has not played up to his level in post season)
3)Aaron Rodgers
4)Drew Brees
5)Big Ben
6)Phillip Rivers

Those are the upper echelon of QBS ..

7)Eli Manning...he helped lead his team to a super bowl and now putting up numbers but cant put him on that level of QB even though he has a ring over Rivers.

Next Level of QBS

Ryan, Josh Freeman, Flacco, Matt Schaub,Cutler ...........all these QBS are grouped together for me...Flacco/Sanchez have playoff wins and regular season success while Ryan has been a winner and putting up great stats has yet to lead us to a playoff win ..

now if thats not fair I dont know what is

I mostly agree with your analysis, bit I don't know if there is any value to the fans being "realistic".

Hey, there is something that is going on in this league that I've said time and time again and people still haven't fully figured it out - there are more GREAT QBs in this league right now than there has ever been in the history of football.

For that reason, you are going to have guys who probably would have been top 3 guys in many other eras who can arguably not even crack the top 10 right now. Maybe Ryan is one of those guys.

Still, Ryan has a pretty good intangible. I think he is way ahead of similiar players with regards to leadership at a young age. And that is the reason he has so many wins.

He's got some things to improve in his game for sure, and there are a few peices missing. Maybe we'll get there, and maybe we won't, but I am sure everybody is going to keep doing their part.

The franchise is in good shape. Better shape than ever. That's all i can really ask for.

Peyton I appreciate what you guys created here, but Swift takes the royal piss. Sometimes I can read his posts where he is criticising Matt or TD and think hey those are valid criticisms. But it is the ignorant know it all better than everyone else posts that get on my last nerve. If they were few and far between that would be different but the guy continuously does it. Let me be clear criticism is one thing, but several posters have commented on how he re routes conversations back to his agenda back to bashing ryan v rodgers back to bashing TD and making all sorts of claims that have no grounding other than personal opinion yet we are forced to take it as fact. And the worst thing is should Matt emerge as a QB who becomes Rogers conference rival they way Manning and Peyton are, regardless of how Matt gets it done he'll then be the one telling us that he saw it coming but that he had to be hard on him on the way.

I am not saying believe in blind faith, but jheez do we really have to sit through this everyday and not get annoyed?

I remember when people gave Jedi a hard time, on AFMB and even earlier on on here. I know I did. But let's be honest the guy switched things up, will make his point once or twice but then move on. Not keep finding ways of diverting threads into what this has devolved into once again. It's tiring.
