the loss of norwood is the reason the falcons arent wiining the superbowl - Paprika Neck - 02-06-2011 09:06 AM

this year the lack of a running back that can keep the edges honest killed turners production. turner is a goddamn monster and our oline too for still getting production in the run game especially considering 8 man fronts that the only responsibility is to stuff the inside gaps. special teams felt the loss of norwood for obvious reasons i wont go into it

Why do people think it was constantly just our 5 offensive linemen and maybe a TE and/or FB going against 8 man fronts all the time?

I blame public education and mothers smoking during their pregnancies.

not sure that Norwood is the ONE" missing piece that is keeping us from winning a superbowl, but the simple fact that he can't stay healthy is definitly stunting our offenses growth.....

3 and 4 sent through 2 gaps of our interior line was a huge problem this year again norwood can keep those plugs honest with outside speed. but i suppose multi level blitzing the tight ends and recievers are sposed to pick that up

Uhh, yeah. Our special teams was one of the best in the NFL. Weems had 3 Return TDs. When has Norwood done that?

I have been an advocate of something similar to this, but not nearly to this extreme. It's over the top to blame one thing like this. You aren't going to be taken seriously either when you try.

So many of us watched the games & saw things that clearly make your statement inaccurate. Like the fact that Turner has slowed down some, that he has no burst until he's past the LOS, that he doesn't cut well & has only average lateral movement, or the fact that if someone touches his shoelaces he gets tripped up.

Would Turner have done better if we had a speed-back who could beat everyone around the edges, catch some screens, run some draws & play-action catching some dump passes in the middle, & reduce Turners carries by about 1/3rd? Hell yes. You won't find a person here who disagrees with that. But we also needed some reliable speed receivers opposite Roddy who could force defensive secondaries to spread out past 10 yards & cover deep routes & also force the middle LB's to take first steps backwards past 5-6 yards as opposed to forwards & 2-3 yards off the LOS. That probably would have helped Turner even more than having Norwood.

It wasn't just the sideline to sideline edges game that was lacking. Defenses had almost a 50/50 shot with us virtually every down... Play against the between the tackles Turner run or cover inside 10 yards from LOS for the short dink-n-dunk pass. And BOTH of those allowed defenses to play us tight & closer to the LOS.

This is why we didn't just miss Norwood, we totally lacked any ability to spread defenses out at all too. These are the "holes" or "explosive weapons" that everyone is agreeing we're missing. A speed-back & some deep-threat receivers to compliment Roddy. A YAC capable TE would be nice too. Gonzo has amazing hands, but he can't do anything after he catches it. Between him, Jenkins, & Finn, we have too many possession receivers & not enough playmakers.

our offense is based on running the ball lacking a home run threat makes the offense in complete causing all aspects of the offense to suffer.

success in any aspect from business to sports compounds itself you add 5 20 plus runs that big play success translates to more explosive plays in the passing game. norwood has proven incapable of playing at the nfl level hd is still young and has shown plenty of big play potential.
