Falcons should consider trading up for AJ Green - Dawg4Life - 01-26-2011 11:26 AM

If the Falcons get a good DE and CB in free agency I think we should offer up our 1st and 2nd rd picks to a team in the top 3. Being a Georgia fan and watching this dude his whole career, I think he is a once in a decade type of WR. He is easily the best all around player in the draft and has the best potential to be an impact player and be an explosive playmaker right away. This guy could be the next Randy Moss IMO. Would you guys be down for at least considering this ONLY if we address both DE and CB in FA before the draft?

I'd love it, I just doubt we have the ammo to do it. We have a few aging players, and I don't see trading future early round picks as something TD would do to get in the top 5 of the draft.

Our first and second rounds picks come no where close to equaling a top 3 pick. Check out this draft value chart...

Draft Value Chart

We would have to trade all of our draft picks to get into the point value for the top three. I think we have all of our seven picks, plus possibly one for Chrisp Houston and one for Ojinakka(sp?). We may already have Houston's from last year.

I like AJ and would love to see him as a Falcon, but it'll take a lot more than a 1st and 2nd.

I like AJ just as much as any guy who appreciates talent, but there's absolutely no way we will get him. As it stands right now, our D is still significantly lacking. TD has stated several times that he drafts on a needs basis. Our WR position will not be addressed in the first round. We have Roddy, who was phenomenal this year, Jenks seems to be getting better even though he may be at his ceiling, HD, who I think they want to give another look because of his first year, then Meier who they probably want to look at again. Then if you look at the link in KJs post, you see it would take farrrrr too much to get up in the top 3, and there's now way we give up THAT much. We have holes in positions that need to be addressed, and that's what they're going to do.

AJ Green is going to the Patriots bruh... they have 2 1sts, 2 2nds, and 2 3rds!!

The only way they won't get him is if they decide to trade one of those 1sts to stockpile picks.

AJ's a great talent, but not once in a decade talent. For example, Calvin Johnson is better. Or at least comparable. He'd be a great fit here, but as mentioned, it would cost a crazy amount of picks to trade up. That contract will also be way higher than all of those traded picks. The Cards went through cap hell just to keep Fitzgerald on their team.

Next, we can't address DE and CB in free agency, as it looks like free agency will be slim pickings. (And in my humble opinion, OLB is a bigger need than CB).

If he for some reason does a draft free fall and gets around 10-ish, it would be a lot more doable, but no one makes trades into the top 3-5 because it's so damn expensive.

Green would be a decent #2 WR

FA isn't going to happen until after the draft anyway

and you don't trade a 1st and 2nd and absorb a #3 pick salary for a #2

Wake up guy's, we have more than just draft picks to trade with. Package Norwood
and Jenkins and our first for Green. Now I'am just using that as an example, but there are different ways to move up in the draft.
