Our "new & improved" D - cnasty - 12-29-2010 11:56 AM

I waited til today to bring this up so we could all let go of the loss and look at things a little more objectively. Our D Monday night, outside of the 90 yard drive looked incredible. Yeah, we missed a few sacks and tackles here and there but as a unit I don't think we have played better ball this year. Obviously BVG blitzed the ever living shit out of Brees and it worked, to an extent. They've only been held to 17pts or less three times all year (including us). I'm just wondering, do you think BVG sticks with this new aggressive routine or does he go back to the shitty bend/don't break defense that we all despise? Discuss.

I love the aggressive D, I've always hated when we drop back into bend but don't break mode. I wish I had a video of that 90 yard drive, I wonder how many times we actually brought pressure. One reason I think the blitz works is it puts our DBs into man coverage, which they have shown to be a strong point.

If it were up to me, I'd say dial up the pressure more often and have our DBs stick to the man coverage. Preferably not playing the receivers 15+ yards off the line of scrimmage.

In the last 6 games the Falcons have only given up 20 points one time. The Falcons are number 5 in scoring defense, and in reality, the defense has played well enough for the Falcons to win every game but 1 this year.

Whatever he is doing, I hope he keeps doing it.

I think the defense is an unmitigated success this year, without a doubt.

Our D shut Brees down. I loved the aggressive, blitzing attack. IT WORKED! I wish we would do that more often.

The fact is, we beat ourselves. McClure and Turner - 2 turnovers that basically cost us a 14 point swing. If we eliminated those 2 mistakes we win the game easily. And that's what hurts the most about that loss.

Blitzing is dangerous. It causes matchups that can be bad news.

For example, any blitz that leaves William Moore 1 on 1 with a talented TE or slot WR......that's just not his game.

You just can't play like that all the time.

If our D can blitz like that in the playoffs we will beat vick and/or brees.

I don't think our O will wet the bed again.

Shut Brees down? He had over 300 yards passing and completed 71.4% of his pass attempts.

As for the two mistakes, if you can eliminate those then the Saints get their two back. Who's to say that the Saints don't march down and score on both those possessions that were stopped by the picks? In that case the Saints win it easily. The fact is that the Falcons turned the ball over as many times as the Saints. You can't have it both ways.

One thing I didn't like from the defense the other night was Abraham in coverage.... and we did it several times and I think the Saints may have converted on all of those.

Overall I'm pleased with how the D played but am now concerned about the offense...

Yes we shut him down, he couldn't do what he wanted to which was go downfield with the ball, he was having to throw to checkdowns all day long, thats what I call a success.

I didn't like our personnel match-up when Jimmy Graham caught the go ahead touchdown. He had William Moore going against him and Willie was 3 yards into the endzone. If a team is inside the 10 yard line, you need to be playing bump and run coverage, or tight man coverage. You can't play a soft zone, because just like Roddy did, Jimmy ran a 1 step slant for the easy touchdown and there was not much that Willie could do.
