It has to drive teams crazy playing us - The Falcon Jedi - 12-11-2010 09:21 AM
This team can take almost an entire quarter to move 80 yards down the field, uses all 3 downs to get 10 yards, Lulling you to death.
Then if the other team gets a lead at the end of the game, they get to watch us move the ball 80 yards in under 60 seconds. Lol.
That's just funny, if you think about it.

I love it and hate it myself. Every 3rd & 5, i'm chewing a different fingernail to the nub. And every come from behind 80 yard drive with under a minute I'm trying not to have a brain aneurism, heart attack, or pull my back out. Which, by the way, I've pulled my back out TWICE this season WHILE watching these games because of air punches/kicks or springing out of the recliner to sprawl on the floor.
But, the adrenoline & excitement is ridiculously awesome at the same time, so it's impossible to not love every second of it all.

For 3 quarters the Falcons play football like Turtles. Slowly moving. But moving nonetheless. I love our field-length drives and how they take up 10 minutes. Then we score. It's kind of awesome to me.
And then the 4th quarter our offense throws 25 yard strikes down the sideline in the blink of an eye. If you are a fan of the team we are playing this would make you rip your hair out. I love it!

I've learned to have faith in this team, so third downs don't worry me. I figure if we don't get it, we'll go for it on 4th, no problem. The other team takes the lead, again no problem. This team has shown the ability to make a quick strike.
This style of play is intentional. They want to take as much time as possible to move down the field, as long as they can come away with points. They are wearing the other team's defense down. This is what allows us to play like we do in the 4th quarter. Their defense is tired, used to playing the run and short throws, now they gotta change pace and keep up with us running down field. This isn't easy to do after you've been running all over the field all day long, getting run over by Turner, and pushed around by our offense. Add to that Ryan's ability to effectively run the no huddle offense and the odds shift in our favor.
One thing I attribute to the ability of playing like this is the conditioning this team goes through. Several of the players made the extra effort to get into shape during the off-season and it paid off. Others went through MMA training, which emphasizes endurance. They place heart monitors on several key players both during practice and the game and use that data to know when to rest the players and when they can push them. They rotate players throughout the games so they don't wear out as much. Also, Mike Smith is extra conservative with injured players, not bringing them back too soon so when they do come back they don't get injured again, missing more games or even the season.
On every front this team is playing smart football and I expect them to be great for years to come. Finally!
