RE: I cringe everytime I see Clay Mathews dominate and wonder why TD did not draft him? - DawnOfThemBirds - 11-08-2010 08:53 PM I believe that Clay Matthews is a excellent pass rusher no matter which scheme he plays in because he can rush inside and outside effectively and defend the pass. His younger brother Casey Matthews is a pretty good player at Oregon and I wouldn't be surprised if he also becomes a big impact player too when he comes into the league. Hopefully for the Falcons because that would be awesome lol. RE: I cringe everytime I see Clay Mathews dominate and wonder why TD did not draft him? - bF™ - 11-08-2010 09:30 PM Matthews would be a better DE than a lb in our system. He's very similar to orakpo in that he's a great pass rusher, but a 4-3 olb doesn't get that opportunity a whole lot. He wouldn't be any better than spoon as a lb for us imo. RE: I cringe everytime I see Clay Mathews dominate and wonder why TD did not draft him? - FullMetalFalcon23 - 11-09-2010 07:12 AM When I watched the video of USC's pro day, Matthews was the only LB I wanted out of that crop. Particularly because he had played safety, dude has fluid hips he can move and he has speed and size and ridiculous agility and body control. Was my favourite of the USC LB's that year RE: I cringe everytime I see Clay Mathews dominate and wonder why TD did not draft him? - g-dawg - 11-09-2010 01:04 PM (11-09-2010 07:12 AM)DoDaDirtyBirdUK23 Wrote: When I watched the video of USC's pro day, Matthews was the only LB I wanted out of that crop. Was my favourite of the USC LB's that year yeah, Matthews was an obvious talent to me coming out of USC and his pro career to date has supported the perceived talent. Oh well - it did not happen for Falcons in this case. Hopefully Peria Jerry emerges soon. Right now he looks like an average player but he is coming off injury. That is my biggest beef with Peria though - I think he is one of those players who will be oft-injured. RE: I cringe everytime I see Clay Mathews dominate and wonder why TD did not draft him? - Radical - 11-09-2010 01:14 PM I just don't see how he fits us. He came in weighing at 240 lbs. You think Kroy Biermann is too small at 265-270? Dude is smaller and lankier than Curtis Lofton. So he obvious has to go at OLB if he plays with us. Now, his claim to fame at the moment is the relentless pass rushing ability. How are we going to take advantage of that in a 4-3 scheme that has LBs playing a more read and react coverage role than blitzing/rushing the passer? I just don't see the fit. An excellent player no doubt, potentially HOF caliber if he keeps this up, but I don't think he would be that monster that everyone sees right now in our scheme. I like Peria and his skill set, what I saw of him in colleges, and analysis as well, I was like ok, not a no brainer pick but I can see where he would be a solid compliment to Babs, and that in time we will look to pick up a guy who is more like a Beserker. But what really got me was that we picked up a guy who was 24 when he was drafted and had Knee injury history. I thought how much are we going to get out of him. Where we picked that year the picks were being made to solidify by that point. Not every one in the first round can be expected to dominate at their position straight off the bat. But Clay is an intelligent player if you think he is pass rush freak, his coverage ability was phenomenal. That being said I understand why we picked the way we did, and I am far happier having Spoon on our D than Matthews because that guy was made to be a Falcon. If he doesn't retire here, I'd be pretty pissed RE: I cringe everytime I see Clay Mathews dominate and wonder why TD did not draft him? - keithbrooking56 - 11-10-2010 12:03 PM (11-08-2010 02:05 PM)g-dawg Wrote: Clay Mathews was at it again last night - dominating the Cowboys - the guy is a freak making plays all over the field. I remember stumping hard for Clay Matthews to be our pick and was upset that we passed on him for a very old rookie player with a long list of injuries already behind him. I got negged like crazy for expressing that opinion but here we are and its crystal clear I was right. Imagine our defense with Clay Matthews in it. Does that really mean "We are not creative enough to use him."
