Report: Saints hiding fracture, torn meniscus in Brees' knee

Posted by Mike Florio on November 4, 2010 12:42 PM ET

Ever since Saints quarterback Drew Brees suffered a knee "situation" on September 26 against the Falcons, rumors have circulated that it's more than a little soreness.

Kenny Wilkerson of WIST radio in New Orleans recently reported, with a high degree of conviction and passion, that Brees has a fracture and a torn meniscus in the knee.

Wilkerson cites an "impeccable source," and he claims that the information is "100 thousand-trillion-million percent" accurate.

Wilkerson also claims that, at times, the pain is causing Brees to make mistakes when calling or executing plays, citing unnamed sources in the offensive huddle.

Though we have no knowledge to confirm or debunk that information, Wilkerson's suggestion that Brees will need "microfracture" surgery to repair the "fracture" gives us pause. Though I'm no doctor (and every current or future medical patient in the world should be happy about that), I don't think "microfracture" surgery is used to repair "small fractures."

That said, the question isn't the treatment but the condition. And if Wilkerson's information is accurate, the Saints would be the latest team to cover up an injury through the end of the season, at which time Brees would have surgery without any sanction for hiding the condition.

As long as Brees doesn't talk about the injury over and over and over and over again.

This may be good news for the rest of the league....

I've been saying since that game that I thought Brees' knee was in worse shape than was being reported. This would not surprise me in the least. And I'll also go ahead with the necessary: The Madden Curse strikes again.

Madden Curse is a bitch.

Damn. Who hit him on the play he got hurt? That man needs a raise! Wink

He doesn't show up on the injury report. Can you say Favre and the Jets?

Playing the Falcons can be hazardous to your health.

Sincerely,

Drew Brees, Pierre Thomas, Pac Man Jones , Desean Jackson

I would have been willing to bet money that his knee injury was more than advertized after that hit he took.

I honestly thought that Harrison would've been the one to lay a hit on Brees that would've put him down for several games. If only von Oelhoffen still played for Pitt..... I wouldn't mind seeing Beason come in on a blitz and rock him one good time. Can you imagine facing Chase Daniel? Laughable.

Is it the left knee?

Looking at his game film from Sunday night, http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/09000d5d81bc7027/GameDay-Steelers-vs-Saints-highlights
it looks like he is planting pretty well with his back foot, but not stepping in and following through to the front foot (left leg). Comically, watch the chest bump after the final TD pass: He keeps his left foot off the ground on the landing!

That being said, it was a celebration after a TOUCHDOWN PASS, so he's not THAT hurt.

It does kill me how (relatively) bad and inexperienced the backups of teams with elite QBs are. Daniel, Hoyer in NE, Painter in Indy. I guess those teams realize if/when their star QB goes down they're done for. Or they're banking on pulling a Tom Brady(or at least a Matt Cassel)
