who is satisfied with our return game? - TonyGraziani - 10-28-2010 01:31 AM I'm not. Weems had a nice runback last game, but that wasn't enough for me. We all know how much ST can effect a game. SD is the #1 team offensively and defensively but are 2-5 because of ST. The Cowboys and Vikings bright spots this year have been their return games. We might not have Devin Hester on our roster but somebody can be a threat back there. This, along with ST coverage, should be #1 on Smitty's "honey do" list during the bye I personally wanna see what HD can do.... Not Harry Douglas. Hot Dog! Franks! Get it? .... *crickets* *cough* Anyway, he was heralded for his return skills and showed nice burst on his int. You don't draft a return man and not let him return. RE: who is satisfied with our return game? - Paulitik - 10-28-2010 01:49 AM It's been pretty disappointing, but HD still doesn't look right to me, and everything about Franks impresses me except his return game (from what little I saw in the pre-season). Weems is okay, but I wouldn't cry if he wasn't our return guy. I'm pretty disappointed in our Special Teams overall. I miss DeCamillis. I just think we need to look into finding the next Dexter McCluster type hybrid player that will be dynamic in the return game. Weems comes across as the guy who will give you a nice return or two ever so often, but will never break the big one. Currently, he ranks 6th in the NFL in Punt Return average at 13.6 yds/return. If you take away anyone who has less than 2 returns, he is ranked 5th. It's the kick returns that he is sorely deficient in (same as last year), where he ranks 20th (17th if subtracting those with less than 3 returns). We could definitely use an upgrade here, but people who think HD back there THIS year will help are probably looking in the wrong place. Like Paulitik, HD doesn't appear 100% to me, and asking him to take on those duties as well is probably asking for trouble. Franks was indeed drafted to help provide return skills, but he didn't get much of an opportunity to do so in preseason, and when he did, he didn't show much of anything. And since Weems isn't exactly stinking up the joint, asking Franks to do some now, and possibly have him fumble one/muff it can prove mighty disastrous. What about having him return some in blowouts you say? As we saw last week, even having a 21 point lead isn't safe from a key turnover/mistake erasing the deficit. We do need to find someone next year who can provide good return average because what we have now is serviceable...but it could be so much better. RE: who is satisfied with our return game? - TonyGraziani - 10-28-2010 02:08 AM I agree, that has to be high on our list. We need two weapons for Ryan and one of them should have return skills. I wouldn't want to sacrifice offensive skills for KRing though if we already have a stud. RE: who is satisfied with our return game? - Das Beerman - 10-28-2010 02:09 AM i dont like our return game so far. Weems did have that nice run last week but other than that, there hasnt been much magic going on. I say we stick HD back there and let him do what he does best. his rookie year he was doing great but then the injury sidelined him. he isnt playing a significant role right now in the offense so why not let him return kicks? RE: who is satisfied with our return game? - Radical - 10-28-2010 02:23 AM As long as Weems isn't turning the ball over or putting us behind the 20 do to him fucking up, I am not bothered by it. It would be nice to see some explosiveness from the return game, and I thought Franks was drafted for just that, but I guess he hasn't caught on yet or the coaches haven't seen a need to put him out there yet. Meh... RE: who is satisfied with our return game? - NZFalcon - 10-28-2010 02:33 AM While its not ideal, Weems is still a decent returner just wish we had someone better doing it RE: who is satisfied with our return game? - Nuccah - 10-28-2010 07:01 AM (10-28-2010 02:23 AM)Radical Wrote: As long as Weems isn't turning the ball over or putting us behind the 20 do to him fucking up, I am not bothered by it. Meh...Bingo. As long as Weems doesn't turn into Adam Jennings and start muffing like there is no tomorrow, I am willing to leave him back there. Franks is a rookie, and I don't like trusting a rookie CB with the football in his hands deep in our own territory. RE: who is satisfied with our return game? - phocis850 - 10-28-2010 07:51 AM I voted not satisfied but to keep Weems. You can't blame our horrendous st play on one guy. RE: who is satisfied with our return game? - caver50 - 10-28-2010 09:38 AM Franks fair caught all but two opportunities in preseason, one of those, he got stuffed immediately and had a nice 30yd. return on the other. Weems has been very reliable, holds onto the ball well, but he just don't seem to have that spark you want to see in a return man. Soooo, I would like see Franks have a few shots at it and maybe play a little corner. I'am not happy with Owens. (10-28-2010 07:01 AM)Nuccah Wrote: Bingo. When do you trust him, without playing time he will always be a rookie. |
