If the NFL really wants to eliminate injuries then they should consider this... - The Falcon Jedi - 10-21-2010 01:51 AM

Just bring back the leather helmets and little pad uniforms from the old days.

Nobody ever had concussions or serious injuries back then. The reason why is because players with hardly no padding and crap helmets knew better than to slam full force into opponents the way they do now. All these high-tech helmet technologies are obviously not working. All the extra padding is encouraging players to attack harder and faster, and the new helmet designs are leading players to think that they wont get hurt from a head-on collision that is basically equivalent to a 40 mph car collision.

Get back to the Basics of what FOOTBALL WAS BUILT UPON instead of trying to bastardize and sanitize the game to the point that it isnt even football really any more.

If anybody still plays some backyard tackle football, do you notice that when you tackle that you dont usually go head-first? You usually wrap up with your arms and body instead. Yea, you can end up with some bumps and bruises and field-rash but you're generally OK. You dont need to be carried off the field in a stretcher, because humans instinctively manage to protect their heads when they feel it needs to be protected. Helmets deter that, because they make you feel like you can run through a brick wall.

I say just go back to the old days and start over. All these injuries that seem to be occuring now never seemed to ever happen back in the 50's or 60's.

I have a similar suggestion in another thread: Concussions and the league.

How would that solve anything?
Removing protective headgear will limit concussions. If someone get's hit and they fall and hit the ground with their head concussion. Helmets limit the amount of concussions. Proper use and wearing of helmets limits even more concussions. New helmets designed to eliminate concussions would solve the problem.

I just don't accept your premise that there were less injuries when there was less equipment. The game was notoriously violent in the early years.

The game of football has gotten less and less violent through the course of it's existence. The only thing that has changed is now the money is so prominent that the players are huge investments, so the league doesn't want them to get hurt.

Even 10 years ago, John Lynch was routinely launching himself helmet first into defenseless receivers in the manner that Merriweather did last Sunday.

Nobody cared.

Haven't you guys seen the new uniform proposal for the NFL? It's clearly the best way to solve the injury problem. I can't wait until the uniforms debut:
