RE: Should we consider switching to a 3-4 next season? - Goal Line D - 10-19-2010 04:54 PM That sure is an interesting thought but it's just not gonna happen with Smity and TD at the helm. Have you actually "Seen" any of these guys play in a 3-4 scheme before? How do you know they cant do it? When is the last time you saw a 295-300 lb DT play NT in a 3-4. The correct answer is, not in this decade. I understand the skill sets needed for a 3-4 defense and I know the skill sets our players have. None of it says 3-4. RE: Should we consider switching to a 3-4 next season? - Braskilla - 10-19-2010 04:57 PM I agree for the most part and be ncie to have that type of defense only thing i would change is on the DL you would have babs and Anderson at DE and we would need to draft sign a 3-4 NT kinda wished we woulda got terrence cody but other than that u would then move Biermann to the Outside along with Spoon and then need to draft another ILB to play nxt to Lofton Sid would also move to a back up OLB role with adkins and Nicholas being the back ups as well...it be intresting but highly unlikely but i will say if we would switch to a 3-4 Lofton would prob be lights out not that he already isn Now im not saying we should switch to the 3-4 cuz like many have pointed out our defense has been lights out up until this past week, i was just pointing out my opinion what would be needed to transition to a 3-4 RE: Should we consider switching to a 3-4 next season? - DaMeatTrough - 10-19-2010 05:02 PM I'm sorry Jedi but this thread is ridiculous. RE: Should we consider switching to a 3-4 next season? - The Falcon Jedi - 10-19-2010 05:05 PM You know what. Every time someone suggests actually switching to a new Defense everybody starts screaming "we dont have the personnell for it!" or "its impossible!" So someone explain to me how teams manage to do that every season - But SOMEHOW it's IMPOSSIBLE for the Falcons to do it? When Dan Reeves took over coaching this team, and he hired Wade Phillips, we had a 3-4 up and running that 1st season. And it wasnt that bad. Maybe if people would start thinking a little OUTSIDE THE BOX? Maybe get Creative? Maybe do something Different? Maybe because What we are doing now really isnt working so well? This is really not that drastic of a change as everybody seems to think. We do actually already run 3-4 packages, if you havent noticed. RE: Should we consider switching to a 3-4 next season? - kane#7 - 10-19-2010 05:25 PM Ok I will have Jedi's Back here... All the NT talk Jay Ratliff is a NT in the Cowboys D and he is only 303lbs, Ron Edwards of the Chiefs is only 315lbs, and Aubrayo Franklin for the 49ers is only 317lbs.... So the 3-4 does not need a 340 pounder in the middle.... but I would have to also say JA98 I would prefer to be at DE he can take up blockers. I wouldn't want us to convert to a completely 3-4 team but I wouldn't mind some 3-4 looks as it will give team more to gameplan against, i would also like to employ the psycho formation that the Packers run but only really cause it looks cool
RE: Should we consider switching to a 3-4 next season? - TonyGraziani - 10-19-2010 05:37 PM Only way it works is with a 34 mastermind. Dom Capers turned GB into a solid 34 overnight. Without a guy like him it wouldn't work. Jay Ratliff is a top 5 NT and he's not too much bigger than our DTs. he is an exception though. Only guys I would have confidence in translating are BeerMan at olb, Anderson and Jerry at de, Spoon and Lofton. Those 2 could be both top 10 ILBs in a 34. The only core player who doesn't seem to fit is Babs, but a 34 genius would find a way to put him in the right spot. Every time someone suggests actually switching to a new Defense everybody starts screaming "we dont have the personnell for it!" or "its impossible!" In 2003, we were the single worse defense in the NFL, right behind the Houston Texans... a team in its second year of existance. Some teams have 4-3 defenses that better transition to 3-4s. We don't have those kind of players. Regardless, why the hell do we need to change? It isn't like our defense has been getting abused all year. We got beat on some mental fuck-ups in one game and now we have to go to a new defense? Come on. RE: Should we consider switching to a 3-4 next season? - JOEinPHX - 10-19-2010 06:31 PM Personnel and coaching styles aside, what makes this question pertinent right now? Until the Philly game, the defense was drawing mostly raves. It broke down badly in Week 6 not because it's a 4-3, but because a free safety screwed the pooch multiple times. How does a 3-4 fix that? EDIT: I see that I've mirrored a lot of what Radical said in the post just ahead of mine. I agree with you, I hate the 3-4 too and even then, we need a D-Cordinator, yes Wade Phillips was here, but you have to draft for 3-4 for 2-3 seasons to get the right personnel. And if they did it next year, Abe would be gone, because he hates the 3-4. I know he probably won't be around in a year or 2 anyway. Just saying. Also the D was not the problem for our last loss, it was the offense couldn't do anything.
