The Pittsburgh Steelers walked off the field Sunday just happy they had won.
A lot of bettors in this gambling city were more concerned by how many points they ended up winning by.
Winners turned into losers and losers ended up winning when a game that should have ended up 17-10 or 18-10 instead went into the record books as the first 11-10 final in NFL history. Though the score made no difference in the win and loss column, it did in the wallets of a lot of bettors on the Las Vegas Strip.
“Anyone who had a bet on the Pittsburgh side and thought they had won weren’t too happy,” said John Avello, director of the race and sports book at the Wynn resort.
A mistake by the officials on the final play of the game between the Steelers and San Diego Chargers didn’t alter the outcome. But it did mean bettors who thought they had won money on the game actually lost, while those who thought they had lost ended up winning.
The Steelers were favored by 4 points, meaning the apparent touchdown scored by the Steelers’ Troy Polamalu on the last play of the game made the difference between Pittsburgh covering the point spread or not. When the touchdown was disallowed, Pittsburgh bettors who thought they had won on a fluke on the last play were left holding worthless tickets.
The NFL said it is discussing with the rule-making competition committee “potential administrative improvements for replay that would help to prevent this type of mistake in the future.” That might take place before the playoffs, ESPN reported.
That presumably could include allowing officials to take a second look at controversial plays, something not now permitted under the current rules.
“On the final play of Sunday’s game between the Chargers and Steelers, Pittsburgh safety Troy Polamalu returned a loose ball 12 yards for a defensive touchdown,” the league said in a statement Monday. “After an instant replay review and crew conference, the on-field ruling of touchdown was incorrectly reversed to no touchdown due to an illegal forward pass by San Diego.
“The incorrect reversal of the on-field ruling of touchdown was acknowledged immediately following the game by referee Scott Green in the pool report interview with a representative of the media.”
Avello said there might have been $10 million bet on the game statewide, and many times more than that in illegal bets around the country and in offshore Internet betting sites. There was more money bet on Pittsburgh, he said, especially in parlay bets.
Though the officials later said they made a mistake in calling back the touchdown, the official score remains 11-10, and Nevada sports books paid off on the final score from Sunday.
So, what this means is that the NFL cares more about the people betting on their games through bookies or fantasy football than the actual teams themselves. Why wasn’t more made of this after the PHI/ATL game? The Falcons remain conspicuously absent from this article as well. Of course when the two teams are the Chargers and Steelers and the outcome isn’t even a factor, now they begin to think about it. But when the fate of a game (and potentially playoff birth) for of a “step-child” franchise like the Falcons is in the balance, no one bats an eye. B.S.

More than halfway into his rookie season, the Falcons don’t mind getting a little more creative with quarterback Matt Ryan.

Then we should be. I’d rather watch last year’s Falcons against the Patriots then this trash. 3 INT’s in the 1st quarter, and 1 completion from the other QB.

We don’t run it correctly. In order for the Wildcat to work, you have to A. have a motion back, and B. have the threat of a pass out of it. All the times we’ve run that play we have never used either. I don’t know what you should call that retarded play we run where the running back lines up at QB and then runs laterally and gets tackled for a 3 yard loss, but I really wish the announcers would stop calling it the Wildcat, because that’s not what it is.
Somebody needs to get some Dolphins, Razorbacks, and Rebels tapes to Mularkey so he can see how the play is properly run, but for god’s sake stop doing the Wildloss play.

ATL and CAR will end with identical records, (11-5)–im being serious– and ATL will get division because of tiebreaker rules which will go all the way back to conference record. CAR will get first WC spot and TB will get second with 10-6 record.
ATL and NYG will get a BYE… ARI will host TB and GreenBay will host CAR in WC round….TB and Car will both win those games and move into division round.
TB @ NYG- NYG win
CAR @ ATL- ATL win
NFC Championship- ATL @ NYG - ATL wins and gets revenge on NY for winning the world series in 1999.
ATL moves onto Superbowl to face….Tenn….. We win of course and Alge cries
The End….
And i know it starts to get alil crazy after the playoffs start, but i have done legit math and believe we could still end up 11-5 and we would be CAR in a tiebreaker as long as we tie the series this sunday.

Folks, barring injury or something, it appears this franchise finally has it’s LEGITIMATE #1 “go to” WR that we’ve been needing ever since Tony Martin departed after the 1998 season. Even back then, Martin was on the wrong side of 30, but he still could beat the defenses best CB and if you left him in man.
Things keep going as they are, Roddy will be an All Pro WR this year. The only NFC WR with more yards is Larry Fitzgerald .
I am so glad we rafted Roddy as there is no way Ryan would be doing so well with out him. If Ryan had Dez White and Peerless Price as the starting WRs we would suck this year. Roddy is the man and I know there is NO WAY we will let him get away.
As far as the “Bust” tag some threw upon him, let me make this clear, Roddy was NEVER a bust. He was developing……you cannot call a WR that gets over 1000 yards his 3rd season and makes All Pro his 4th a bust.
