the irony of our passing game

RE: the irony of our passing game
What the heck is with some of the formations we use? Every time we come out in one of those really horrible looking ones I can't help but to think "we're screwed."

So true. Watch Brady or Peyton as they sit back in the pocket forever while the receivers finish their routes. Smith talked about how its won in the trenches . Agree totally... so we go out and draft undersize fast guys?? Our line is built to run block I'm guessing, but they cannot pass block. Maybe Ryan just needs some daylight and knowing Baker has his back worries him : )

RE: the irony of our passing game
Another thing I noticed on Sunday was that it didn't seem like Ovie was out there as much as he had been in the past. I'll have to re-watch as I'm going off memory, but I thought we were running a lot of single back formations that we typically didn't run. Am I wrong on this?

Amen to both of you. This is what I've been saying. The problem is time, time, time, time.

You can not make your reads, get set, redirect the safety and make the pass in an average of 1.7 seconds. You just can't.

You can put all the Boldins, Fitzgeralds or VJ's out there all day - but if he doesn't have the time to set up the pass - it is not going to improve this situation.

You hit it on the head when you said where Tony has really hurt us. We are utilizing him more in the passing game as a receiver than a blocker.

In 2008, when we were facing 4-3 defenses all year and had that extra TE in blocking on pass plays - Ryan was able to make his reads and get the ball deep when he needed to.

We can't do that with this line against the 3-4 defenses and especially without the extra TE help.

We can beat the WR, TE or other issue to death - but if our offense doesn't win at the LOS - we won't have a dynamic Passing game.

Now I find it hilarious that people say that Tony G. is a hindrance to our offense. Would you rather have an inferior player on the field? Let's trade him to the jets and bring back Ben Hartsock, thatll get our offense goin! Yeah, you fail.

And if Matt has a problem lockin on to Roddy and Tony, what good would having prime Jerry Rice on the other side be? We need to get him outta that rut and get some elite coordinators in here before/as much as we need to worry bout upgrading World of Jenks.

All in all, the only thing that can help our offense this year is for Matt to open up his eyes more. Whether MM is at fault for that too, idk. We will see.

Oh and btw, we can still go 15-1, so its all G for now.

You basically are replying to a rant I made on the other board.
My theory is that we need a TE to do nothing but block on 1st and 2nd Down, then have Tony G. get open on 3rd and 5 or more. I do not think we need to be throwing to the TE on 1st or 2nd Down, or even looking to throw to him then.

Good observation, Tandy. Time. Go back and look at video from 2008 and with his protection had almost 3 seconds to get the ball away and we had a better vertical game.
We need another half second.

RE: the irony of our passing game
The Ryan/Tony G lockon syndrome is a myth. And in general, Ryan is very good about not locking onto receivers. My theory is the problem he's having has to do with his pre-snap reads. In certain situations, he will lock on to a guy he's "sure" will be open. Kinda like that throw to Roddy that Polamalu picked off. He won't always throw picks, but he'll miss open receivers because he was so confident in the pre-snap.

This is part of his development curve. He'll figure it out.

What the QB stares down the greatest receiving TE of all time? That's crazy. I believe Elvis Grbac did that too in KC.

RE: the irony of our passing game
I'm on my cell so idk how to quote, but bc fan I like your theory. Matt just KNOWS who is gonna be open due to all the prep and film....but that only applies to Tony and Roddy. If he really was fully operating like that, he would just KNOW that HD would be open and force it to him in a triple team too right? And I totally agree with the point that the ol needs to step up. But (try to follow me on this) if you coached the Mavericks, are you gonna blame your offensive rebounding problems on Dirk Nowitski being by the 3point line? No, you're gonna let a player do what he does best and your center is gonna hafta do his job and pick up the slack. Make sense? If our line can't block a 4 or 5 man rush by themselves, then THAT is the problem. And if Matt is on Tonys nuts as much as yall say he is (in so many words) then wouldn't he do the same thing no matter what big name we brought in? "we jus traded a first for vj, I GOTTA get him the ball" the fact is Matt needs to decide who is gettin the ball .5 seconds before he THROWS it, not .5 before he SNAPS it.
