RE: rank the best Falcons QBs
It says alot about our franchise that we have such slim pickings for this question. We have had some talent at QB, certainly, but the overall product and talent around the QB position was so weak at times that they just couldn't achieve a high level of success.
Having said that, here are my rankings... 1. Steve Bartkowski (121 Games as Falcons Starting QB...56.2 Completion Rate...23470 yards...156 Touchdowns...144 Touchdowns...2 Time Pro Bowler...Led the team to the playoffs 3 times, compiling a 1-3 Record) Bartkowski gets this position from me mostly because of longevity. He owns most every Falcons Passing Record, and played more games at the QB Position (for the Falcons) that any other player, by 2X. He also took the Falcons to the playoffs 3 times, more than any other QB in our history (sad...) 2. Michael Vick (67 Games as Falcon Starting Quarterback...54.1 Completion Rate...11505 Yards...71 Touchdowns...52 Interceptions...3 Time Pro Bowler...Led the team to the playoffs in 2002 and 2004, compiling a 2-2 record...RUSHED for 3859 Yards and 21 Touchdowns) Not your typical quarterback (dumbest statement in the history of football), Vick has redefined the position. During his time with the Falcons, we was the most electric and dynamic player in the league. He is only one of three Falcons quarterbacks in history to have a winning career record when he started (Chandler and Ryan). What makes me put him second is his combination of passing and rushing abilities. He was not the best passer, and certainly not the best at studying his film, but in the end he could beat you passing or running. He also led the team to two playoffs. Those two aspects put him second in my list (barely). 3. Chris Chandler (68 Games as Falcon Starting QB...58.7 Completion Rate...13268 yards...87 Touchdowns...56 Interceptions...2 Time Pro Bowler...Led the team to the playoffs in 1998, and the franchise's only Super Bowl in 1998) A very consistent QB, Chandler led the Falcons to their only Super Bowl appearance. However, a very strong argument could be made that the Falcons MVP in 1998 was Jamal Anderson, who rushed for 1846 yards during the campaign. However, Chandler threw for 3154 yards that season, and had 25 Touchdowns to only 12 Interceptions. Once knock on him was his durability...he never played in all 16 games of a season due to injuries. 4. Matt Ryan (30 Games as Falcon Starting QB...59.8 Completion Rating....7771 Yards....47 Touchdowns...29 Interceptions...Led the team to the playoffs in 2008) Obviously early in his career, but Matt Ryan is posturing himself to become the best quarterback in Falcons history. He currently has the best winning percentage of any Falcons starting Quarterback (20-10), but, to be fair, he probably has more weapons surrounding him than any previous QB. What should set him apart eventually is his work ethic and game study. If Dimitroff and Coach Smith continue to surround Ryan with talent, and if Ryan continues to grow as a QB, he should pass the previous three quarterbacks in the next several years 5. Chris Miller (66 Games as Falcons Starting Quarterback...14066 Yards Passing...87 Touchdowns...72 Interceptions...Pro Bowler in 1991...Led team to playoffs in 1991 and won against NO before losing to Washington) Miller is second in Falcons QB History in yards, touchdowns and interceptions, but only compiled a record of 23-43 in the games he started, posting seasons of 5-8, 3-12, 3-9 and 3-5. He probably could have been better with more talent (Andre Rison was his best, and probably only good receiver), but in the end did not put up many wins. |

Yes, Mort kicked that final field goal, but aside from that, my most vivid memory is Chandler, bloodied and limping - driving that ball down the field. You can't take anything away from Chandler that year. He was the unquestioned leader of the team. He got us there whether anyone wants to admit it or not. Yes, it took the team - it always does. But, time and again, I see threads on these boards about how the key ingredient in getting to the superbowl is the QB - and it's true in 99.9% of the cases. Chandler deserves every credit for being the QB that led us to the SB - he and only he has done that so far. ![]()

I am generally a stat guy, but to be fair, stats and the Falcons don't really go together. As much as I love this team, we have been downright awful at times. I am still sitting here thinking that Chandler should be higher, but I will stick with my original post. Good topic...it was fun to break it down and contemplate the choices. |

RE: rank the best Falcons QBs
The weirdest thing about this is that it shows that despite me missing the first 32 years of this team, I really didn't miss much. That's sad and cool at the same time, knowing I am a true fan of this team at the best time of our life. Hella kudos go to alla yall who were here before 98. I can only imagine how that season felt after all the years of....yeah.

Any time someone complains about Ryan my first thought is remembering David f'ing Archer and the Gerald Riggs Or Bust 1980's. Now that will scare you straight every time.

That's the truth...It is sobering to look back at what we had to endure... If you want a reality check as to how good we have it now, take a look at this link to see the quarterbacks of the past. Take a look at those records! |

RE: rank the best Falcons QBs
The only thing I can add to whats already been said is that Chris Chandler had one of THE best play action fakes I've ever seen. Guy was deadly when faking to Jamal, and then hitting Mathis or Martin deep.
