can the NFL fire everyone?
If I was an owner I'd consider getting along with other owners, and fire everyone that doesn't show up to training camp. No matter how big named they are; then I'd have open to public try outs, and if the ex-NFL players have any loyalty to their team then they can join in a tryout.

I being the owner would be the employer, the players are no entitled to a percentage of my income, nor an union, because that would be a conflict of interest against my business.

Any thoughts? We don't have nothing else to talk about, go Braves.

You can't just "fire them", they have contracts in place.

I have a contract with my employer, if I don't show up you can bet my contract will be terminated; NFL players can't be above that.

The owners locked out the players... that's why they aren't showing up. You can't chain the doors to the place shut, and then fire your employees because they didn't come to work.

Besides... why, in this day and age, should a player have some kind of "loyalty" to a team? In the era of free agency, it's very, very rare to find a player who spends his entire career with one team. Even greats like Rice, Montana, Young, etc. were shown the door at some point.

As stated by the poster after me, because the owner's instituted the lock-out.

Either way, expectations of any kind of player loyalty at the professional level is ridiculous. No team in the NFL shares any kind of loyalty to their players, and would cut them in a heartbeat if it meant a better alternative or saving money. Joe Montana, Drew Bledsoe, Donovan McNabb, etc. Where was the loyalty with those guys?

I'm all for loyalty to a team from a player, but until I see loyalty to a player from the team I don't expect it.

You realize this is not a strike, right? The owners are locking the players out of training camp.

EDIT: Sorry, got quick on the reply, didn't read the responses. I guess your question should be if the players can go and start their own league.
