WalterFootball.com 2011 Mock Draft (4 rounds) and 2012 Mock (1st round)

Quote:1st Round
Atlanta Falcons: Kyle Rudolph, TE, Notre Dame
Tony Gonzalez told reporters earlier that he's "50-50" on retiring after this season. If he hangs it up - I think he definitely will if he wins the Super Bowl - the Falcons will really need help at tight end.

2nd Round
Atlanta Falcons: Titus Young, WR, Boise State
The Falcons need a strong No. 2 wide receiver across from Roddy White. Atlanta would have a ridiculously dangerous offense if the speedy Titus Young pans out.

3rd Round
Atlanta Falcons: Cliff Matthews, DE, South Carolina
John Abraham will be 33 a month after the 2011 NFL Draft, so the Falcons may want to invest in a young defensive end.

4th Round
Atlanta Falcons: Cecil Shorts, WR, Mount Union
More weapons for Matt Ryan. The Falcons need to surround their franchise quarterback with talent because the cupboard's pretty bare right now.

Quote:2012 1st Round
Atlanta Falcons: LaMichael James, RB, Oregon
This definitely doesn't address a need right now, but by the time the 2012 NFL Draft rolls around, Michael Turner will be 30 years old. And there is precedent for this - the Rams took Steven Jackson in the mid 20s when Marshall Faulk was entering his 30s.

Besides, LaMichael James would really add a new dimension to Atlanta's offense.

Personally I love the first three 2011 picks and the 2012 pick. I would be in heaven if we got these guys.

I doubt LaMichael would pass the Falcon filter. I'm not saying I agree or not, but taking a guy like that would raise some eyebrows and put TD/Blank's stance on character into question.

1 Kyle Rudolph is a smart pick, provided his hamstring is not destroyed. The top LT and DE prospects will be off the board and the remaining prospects won't be much better than later round picks. Rudolph makes sense because he is a true dual threat TE. He blocks well, but is an excellent receiver. He is a lot like Pettigrew and Witten.

2 I don't think that we will be going after a WR this high in the draft (certainly not two). I suspect that Smith will want to add to his improving defense. At this point, the best values will be at LB. Look for a quick, smart LB like Greg Jones. Jones' size might be an issue for other teams, but not ours. I like Nicholas, but I want our LB corp to become elite. I think that a player like Jones fits the bill. A lot of people don't like our WR corp, but I do. I still think that HD has a lot of potential to realize and Meir is still a viable option going forward.

3 Matt Sczur (spelling). This is the sort of kid that our offense needs. He can play RB, WR and make an impact on ST's. He is smart, quick and willing to do anything for his team.

4 Hairston (OT, Clemson). Not a lot is written about him, but he has the ability to play both OT positions. Once again, he is smart, tough and very willing. I don't see him as a likely starter early in his career, but he can provide insurance for Baker and possibly take over for him in a few years.

5 Marcus White (DE). He has reasonable size, is fast and is loved by his coaches at FSU. I like him as another developmental DE that will light a fire under Sidbury's butt.

The 2012 projection is right on target. Once Turner turns 30, we will have to draft his replacement. It might be LaMichael, or some other guy. The point is that we are a run first offense, and we can not allow the talent at RB to drop.

I don't see us taking 2 WR in the first 4 rounds, that would mean we have to give up on HD or Meir and I don't see that happening. Also, I think it's a pretty sure bet that we will draft a late round RB, we always seem to, hopefully we'll find another gem in the late rounds a la Snelling. I guess we have to keep going through the Thomas Browns and Antone Smiths of the world until we find one that sticks.
