RE: Two things I hope that we can correct before the playoffs begin...
By the way, some Saints fans have asked the same question about the Saints' offense. When Brees goes into the no huddle the Saints are deadly. But, they prefer to only use it in the two minute offense because it limits all of the personnel sets that Payton and Brees prefer. The Saints routinely run out 11 or 12 different personnel sets in the first 15 scripted plays and then bases the rest of the play calling on what they feel are the most successful of these. Running an extensive no huddle would negate this strategy.

That said, I have noticed the lack of offensive variation in the Falcons' play calling this year. I think that is a combination of the coaching and the lack of depth. This is where Turner's lack of a receiving game and the lack of a play making TE behind Gonzo comes into play. The lack of production south of Jenkins also hurts at WR.

I agree on the lack of variation....I personally think Mularkey is not our answer. Turner can receive but they tend not to use it for whatever reason...watch some of the older chargers games...despite beliefs he can't catch, i assure you it is opinion (it is not his strongest suit i admit....but that is not a play mularkey calls very often...though I see him using Snelling and Ovie a lot more this year than last.)
We need a good slot receiver and backup TE though....I think you hit a lot of points to our weaknesses.....that said sometimes staying simple also has its benefits. The quick slant is still one of the deadliest plays on the field, but tends to be under used (I imagine because of blind hits to receivers....but I have not seen it used as much as when Joe Montana/Steve Young used it to tear people apart....Hell Jerry Rice use to use a quick slant then break out the other end and run for 20-30 plus on a regular basis.....

I will say i don't care for the typical banter with rivals on a board set up for our fans.....if i want to argue, I can go to a bar.....but i do enjoy a lot of your insights....

I really appreciate that. That is why I come to these sites. I love the game and love my Saints, but feel I need to know more about the opponents. I have over the years learned to weed through the fluff and get real insight. I try to share the same insight without the gardening concept going the other way.

I also do not care for that "my dad can beat up your dad" stuff. Tell me why you believe the old man can take mine and I'll listen. But, given everything else, I'll still put money on my 76 year old dad. He still has those old man muscles that are amazing.

RE: Two things I hope that we can correct before the playoffs begin...
These aren't excuses...these are some things that will help aid us when we try to make a deep run in the playoffs.

Imagine if Jenkins was even near as reliable as Roddy...Gonzalez would just be an added bonus. If that were to happen, we'd be unstoppable, but we're not there yet. This hurts me to say, but I respect the Saints' offense due to the fact that any of their players can make big plays week in and week out. We contained Colston and Moore well, but Meachem stepped in and carried the load the whole night. Do that to us and the result is what happened Monday night...we need more production from our receivers. You can be proud of Jenkins making a 3rd down catch here and there, but what seperates the elite teams from the rest is one thing: consistency.

That's all I'm looking for...I need to see that Jenkins can hold the offense down when Roddy isn't performing well. If not, then we need to bring in someone else. I don't expect Douglas to be that coming off injury, but I will next year. Their all in their 3rd year in this system and Roddy is the only one that has shown improvement. The play where Jenkins dropped the TD was a good play call...he just didn't make the play. He's bigger and stronger than Porter...no reason that pass should've been dropped. Jenkins needs to develop the same mentality that Roddy has when it comes to whomever lines up across from him...he needs to develop some damn swagger quick because we need him to be a factor in the postseason. As for Turner, he needs to keep a box of matches on him at all times.

Jenkins can't catch and never steps up.
Turner is too slow and can't hit the hole.

Then the next week, Jenkins will make an amazing catch and Turner will put up huge numbers, then everyone's opinions will change.

The reason why we lost this game is because their defense shut down our offense and the coaching staff never made the proper adjustments to win the game. Look at the Giants-Eagles game. The Giants blitzed and blitzed Vick in the first half taking him out of the game. The Eagles coaches went into the locker room at the half made the adjustments and the Eagles took control. The Giants coaches never made any attempt to readjust themselves and kept blitzing. Game over.

After the second interception we should have switched up to the no huddle on the short field and marched down like we did against the Ravens. Instead we bombed out and gave them the ball and they played Falcon football - long drive wore out the defense and took the lead. The coaching staff brain farted the game.

If you were looking for someone to step up where were Roddy and Gonzo on that drive? Roddy hasn't had a 100 yard receiving game since the Rams. Either he is hurt much more than previously thought or he isn't giving his all or he is double covered, but I don't buy the double covered bit. He spent most of the first half of the season double covered and put up huge numbers.

i don't think roddy's knee is 100%, ok so 3 more catches and he'll own the receiving record this year (catches, he already has the team season record for yards in '08) he's having a heck of a year, no doubt about it. I'd prefer to sit him next week and let him rest two weeks. Jenks did ok this week, HD had been catching some passes the last few games. Give them the reps vs the Panties and get em some practice, let roddy get back to 100% for the playoffs

Chew on THAT, Petunia!
