RE: To all you amateur Falcons Fans.. the Term "Big Ben" has nothing to do w Steelers
Atlanta 28, San Francisco 24
Nov. 20, 1983 Although the Atlanta Falcons have been more lightweight than heavyweight in their 34-year history, they have produced several memorable Hail Mary finishes – and none better than the play Billy "White Shoes" Johnson made at home against the 49ers. The play was called "Big Ben" and quarterback Steve Bartkowski heaved the ball down the left sideline on the game's final play. Somehow, Johnson not only made the catch at the 5-yard-line, but he managed to dance his way past many would-be tacklers to lunge into the end zone to complete the 42-yard play and give Atlanta the victory. Five years earlier, Bartkowski had hooked up with Alfred Jackson for a 57-yard Hail Mary pass with 19 seconds left to beat New Orleans, 20-17. And in 1991, Billy Joe Tolliver found Michael Haynes for 41 yards with one second left to beat the 49ers, 17-14, in a key NFC West |

I'm actually pretty familer with Bartkowski's Hail Mary but as I wasn't born until 89' I've never seen it. Not a highlight or noth'n. One of the biggest plays in my favorite franchise's history and I've never seen it .Were there no camera's at that game?

Yeah, alot of folks were confused by the term "Big Ben" i think they thought it had something to do with Rothslenberger sexual escapades.. LOL.. I wish i could find a video of one of our Big Ben plays.. Heres another one.. man we had a buncha Big Ben's... 1978 — Atlanta Falcons vs. New Orleans Saints: The Falcons beat the Saints 20-17 on a "Hail Mary" pass from Steve Bartkowski to Alfred Jenkins. The play was known as "Big Ben." Later in the season, the Falcons beat the Saints again on the final play of the game after a failed "Hail Mary" pass when the Saints were called for pass interference. The Falcons scored on a run from the one-yard-line on the next play. The play became known as "Big Ben II." The second game was one of the few times (if not the only time) that officials called defensive pass interference on the play, even though it could be argued that pass interference occurs often on "Hail Mary" passes. |
