RE: Titus Young
Green & Jones will be the only receivers to go in the first round, unless we take Torrey Smith at 27, which I don't believe we will. I still think we take Rudolph & go for WR in the 2nd. And there's a chance that Jernigan (first choice) & Young (second choice) could still be there because of all the needs of the rest of the teams in the league.
And even if those guys are gone, Vincent Brown is another Jernigan/Young clone. Hankerson & the big kid from Pitt, both of which are 4.5 guys, should not be what we're looking for. I'm almost certain TD is looking for a true speedster with deep threat & YAC ability, which means a 4.3 guy with proven high YAC stats in college (ie. Smith, Jernigan, Young, & Brown only). |

The one thing I'll say to this is sometimes the 4.5 guys are deep threats...if they're able to sky for the ball. That's the Plaxico type. He didn't have great speed, but caught a lot of long balls, because he could adjust and high point the ball. I'll take that kind of deep threat, also. Each will back off the safeties, and each will help on a 3rd and 8 blitz (as the Plaxico type is great for slants). I think in the modern NFL, going up and fighting for the ball is becoming one of the most important WR traits. It's especially true if your QB isn't great at the deep ball, because it gives him a lot more room for error. But, we need both. |

We need a Plaxico Burress/Muhsin Muhammad type who will go up for the ball and can be relied on to come down with it (a classic 2 receiver) as well as a burner who can get separation and back safeties off. If you have both of those qualities, you're a superstar, but you can get guys that have one of the two qualities in the late 1st to 3rd rounds. Picking up either one this year will be great, but both are pretty important. I like Jenkins if we keep him and get Young I believe that we will now have at least 2 good receivers and 1 great one... that is a poerful combo when you have White & Jenkins on the outside with Young moving into the Slot or Jenkins in the Slot it can cause a lot of mismatches.. I don't want to get rid of Jenkins because when we need a clutch catch it's usually #12 that gets it for us... |

I don't advocate getting rid of Jenkins, I just think he's a solid 4. You have a possession guy like Muhsin Muhammad at 2, a Titus young type at 3...those enable Roddy to run more routes, too. Then, you have Jenkins come in at both spots. You just need a guy when pressure's coming, you know you can look to. Jenkins has improved, but he still doesn't get much separation and doesn't have the body control to go up and get the ball on fade type routes...he's in no man's land. |

RE: Titus Young
As a follow on, Sydney Rice and Plaxico Burress are both considered deep threats and are both 4.5+ guys..with Plaxico more like 4.6. They're deep threats because they're able to go up and catch the ball when in traffic...so, if they're singled, you throw it to them.
I think a player like that would ope up the field nearly as much as a D Jackson type. But a 4.5 to 4.6 guy who won't WIN AT THE BALL is pretty useless. |
