Thomas Dimitroff's Three Year Progress Report
OK, so I chilled out for a spell like I said I would by immersing myself in one of my favorite pastimes: Looking shit up.
What you have below is the companion piece to Matt Ryan's three-year progress report that I posted here a month or so ago. I can only hope this one doesn't suffer the same fate. A couple of notes: I included two sets of data for Ozzie Newsome, as he is often credited with being the true architect of that 2001 Super Bowl-winning Ravens team. For those who follow this line of thinking, the figures in parentheses cover the three-year period that began when Newsome was first hired on as Director of Player Personnel in 1996 – the title he carried until he was given the official GM designation in 2002. So, just take your pick on the data set that is to your liking. Also, there are certain coaches on this list (Walsh, Shula, Noll, Shanny) who were also their teams' defacto general managers, as there was nobody you could point to in those organizations' front offices who held that title officially at the time they were hired on. Finally, I included Bill Polian twice because, a) the Colts gig was not his first and, b) the Bills were pretty damn successful under his watch, despite being just wide right of actually winning a championship. So, with that out of the way, here is how our GM stacks up with the best in the business... Also, he is the only GM on the list to have won two EOTY awards, not to mention being able to boast a ROTY winner, a COTY winner and an EOTY award all in his first three seasons. Pretty impressive, I'd say. Looking forward to getting those playoff wins. |

RE: Thomas Dimitroff's Three Year Progress Report
Quick question: Why is Ozzie Newsome considered the architect of the Ravens Super Bowl team when he was only the "Director of Player Personnel"? From what I can find the "Director of Player Personnel" isn't a scout and isn't making the GM type decisions, so what makes him the architect?
This is what I found as a description of that position, whether he had more or less duties and responsibilities. I don't know. Quote:As a Director of Player Personnel, much of the work involves direct contact with the team's players. On a daily basis, the director may help coordinate team travel, player appearances off the field, train and support players in handling media coverage, assistant with personal matters that effect the team and manage new player orientation programs and initiatives. The director also works with team office management and the coaches to ensure players are being supported to perform at their best athletic level. He is also responsible for being keenly aware of player contracts and agreements with his team and others. Although those working in this position can be found at a desk, many times the work can be outside the office traveling with the team. Also great work on all the research.

RE: Thomas Dimitroff's Three Year Progress Report
Really good post
The only thing I can contest is pro bowl players cause there are players that were here before TD But that also detect from others as well Vafalcon- go read up on Ozzie. Lot of NFL people credit him for building SB team ![]() I'm delusional from our playoff loss against GB . Don't take me seriously until year 2413 . - Added by Phocis because of this post. Warned here. Do not remove. |

It was Vice President of Player Personnel, which, to my understanding, oversees the pro and college scouting departments. Personally, I don't think someone can be given credit for building a team until they have final say in all personnel decisions, especially in hiring or firing a head coach. I don't think anyone would argue, however, that as strictly a talent evaluator, Ozzie did play a significant role in bringing that franchise a championship. |

The fact that half the GMs on that list didn't get a postseason win until sometime after their third season illustrates not only the painstaking process of building a playoff team from the ground up, but also the random nature of the playoffs themselves. I imagine that's why awards such as MVP, COTY, EOTY, etc. are voted on before the postseason begins. As long as we remain perrrenial playoff contenders, the postseason wins will come. From what we have seen so far, there is nothing to suggest that we won't remain perrenial playoff contenders. |
