Since Charles Johnson could be "in play", what should we pay for him?
He's 24 years old and his best years should be ahead of him. As long as he was not a "contract year/one year wonder"(and I don't think he was), Charles Johnson probably can cash in twice during his career if he puts up numbers in the A-T-L.

Signing Charles Johnson is a matter of two questions:

1) What is he worth?
2) What will the market bare?

I will take each question individually.

1) What is he worth?
I think Charles Johnson is worth $9 million/yr for 5 years - the franchise tag is at $13 million though and this is for the "top 5" average salaries but the long-term deals rarely touch the franchise figure.

2) What will the market bare?
4-3 teams looking Defensive End:
Carolina, Atlanta, New Orleans, Jacksonville, Tampa, Denver, Buffalo,

I think of those teams - Jacksonville, Tampa and Buffalo won't spend the money and all those teams should be in position to draft a 4-3 D-End.

I think Atlanta's main competition would come from Carolina looking to re-sign CJ, Saints looking for more pass rush without blitzing or Denver whose new head coach just so happens to be the former head coach of Carolina.

I think given the fact that Falcons are better team than Carolina/Denver and that the state of Georgia is where Charles Johnson is from and played his high school and college football would give the Falcons an advantage. The ownership situation and coaching situation is also the most stable. So, if Falcons can come up with a legit offer I think we would win the day........

Here goes:

Charles Johnson signs with Atlanta Falcons
Terms:
6 years, $54 million with $27 million guaranteed. So Falcons basically guarantee the first 3 years of the contract - CJ has financial security for life. This is a lot of money for CJ but he looks like he is and will maintain a high degree of productivty. If he ends up being a bust, then Falcons cut CJ after 3 years.

The more recent contracts have been a long shorter than they have seemed to be in the past. A lot of big names have been getting 4ish year deals. I'd give him $9 million a year for 4 years, and he can cash in at 28/29 again, and I think he'd be easily worth it.

Worst part is... it took me 20 seconds to remember his name. Good player too.

Beason. (sp?) I think he still has at least another year before he hits the market.

Agreed with OP. 6 years, 54 million with 27 of that guaranteed. I don't believe for a second that he is going to be a bust, unlike Ray Edwards.
