Wow. I looked at the prior year and we were 19th in total yards, 16th against the pass, 23rd against the run. Not as bad as 2003, but definitely not some great defense either.

RE: Should we go 3-4?
No we don't have a NT that can run it if we were going that route id want at least 3 guys on our roster 300+ 2 of them 310+ and one 330+

And there is no experts left out there to run it for us...

I just want a DE in FA

And why don't you look at the 2002 Falcons defense?

8th in points allowed
47 sacks (4th in the NFL)
24 interceptions (3rd in the NFL)
26 forced fumbles (9th in the NFL)

All in the 3-4 under Wade. That was a great defense. We consistently brought pressure all over the field, we forced turnovers and we didn't give up many points.

If we had that defense now we'd be going to multiple Super Bowls.

If we bring in a big fatty then we could practically have the same thing as this season except we'd have an extra body that could cover the middle of the field. I like this because this league is pass happy, not to mention that our DL draft picks seem to go no where.

One thing in Atlanta Lore, We have tried that before in 2003 and it did horribly, because we had a good coach, Wade Phillips, but the wrong players to do it with . I think if Wade has stayed we would have had the Chargers defense. You have to draft for the 3-4 like YOUR WHOLE draft, for a couple of years. Right now our DTs would probably be too light and are DES except JA98 are not the right body types. Our DTs could play the DEs positions, but we need a good 345 lb DT. And there are certain players whould would be against it, but he might be gone soon in a couple of years and thats Abe. Also we would have to have a coach that knows the 3-4 and BVG aint it. Closest one would be Todd Grantham at UGA, he learned under Phillips and Bellicheck, but UGA doesn't have the right personnel to do the 3-4 right yet. He would probably leave. Wink

IT WOULD BE WHOLESALE CHANGE, don't think it will happen. Confused after a 13-3 season, 4-3 can work great, but same way, WE NEED THE RIGHT PLAYERS.

Funny only one team out of the 4 super bowl contenders that does 4-3 is the Bears. But if you look at the last 10 years the super bowl winners. 4-3 has done better. The great Ravens team defense was 4-3 they went 3-4 later, Bucs 4-3

Good points made. I definitely don't think that we will go 3-4 after this season. But if we did, I still believe we could pull it off. Abe is strong enough to get the job done in a 3-4 at his age I really think. He might not be that big mass, but his strength and bull rush could even it out. If we were to go to the 3-4 we would need to reset and draft all new DT's. Babs COULD work. I definitely think our linebackers (currently) could get the job done, and Kroy could move to OLB also.

RE: Should we go 3-4?
We simply do not have near the type of personnel to handle it.

We have nothing that could work at NT.
Our best DTs don't even come close to fitting the 3-4 DE mold.
Our heaviest DEs like Jamaal Anderson aren't going to be requiring double teams or collapsing a pocket with a bull rush.
Our OLBs and lighter DEs don't really fit the mold of a stand-up 3-4 OLB that can rush the passer.

We simply aren't built to be a 3-4 team.

RE: Should we go 3-4?
I would love nothing more than to have a 3-4 defense, along with a mastermind to run it. But we should absolutely not switch to it. It will cost us wins for at best one season as the players adjust, and that's not to mention the talent/scheme mismatches that creates. It's a mini rebuilding project in a way. Of course if a mastermind becomes available...
