RE: Should we go 3-4?
BTW, both the Cardinals and Bills has to switch back to 4-3 for most of their alignment's after trying to implement the 3-4 without proper personal. It was also a HUGE reason why the Broncos were so awful this year. The 3-4 is a great D, but you don't just decide you're going to run it without MAJOR personnel changes. We would be terrible in a 3-4 with who we've got and yall would scream for the head of whatever coordinator that runs it.

RE: Should we go 3-4?
Oh, I can already hear the howling now...
"We should have never switched to the 3-4. Van Gorder obviously doesn't know how to run it, why in hell would we change to a scheme he has little to no experience in". |

2003 Falcons D.
Why you don't just "switch" to a 3-4. |

We've drafted Jerry and Peters to rotate alongside Babs at DT and Bierman and Sidbury, along with whoever we pick up this offseason. I highly doubt they make the switch. I'd just love to pick up some "swing" players that can rush the passer standing up or with their hand on the ground so that we can run more exotic blitzes. BVG showed it early in the GB game, but switched back to prevent for some reason. BVG got a taste of how bad it would be to blitz the Packers very early. Rodgers connected with Jennings with an intermediate pass between the tackles. Jennings was on his way to a long TD when Nicholas saved the play. If memory serves right, we did not blitz on that play. We rushed four and still could not cover the middle of the field. Imagine how ridiculous it would have gotten if we committed anther defender to rush Rodgers. We were humiliated by the Packers. They methodically moved up the field on five consecutive long drives. They scored a TD every time. BVG had the right schemes called and even put players in position to make impactfull plays. Five sack opportunities were squandered. That is not on the DC. That is on the players. BVG does not have the personnel to call an aggressive game. Hopefully, that will change this off season. We need an edge pass rusher and an experienced CB to handle the nickle situations. Add another quick LB and we may finally see the defense that Smitty and BVG have invisioned. |

He tried calling several different types of plays and the players lost their individual matchups, whiffing on sacks like you mentioned. Two or three of those sacks could have changed the whole outlook of the game. I'm not saying this team doesn't have any talent, but it's definitely lacking some as witnessed after that game. I'll be very disappointed if I don't see some major defensive upgrades this offseason. |

RE: Should we go 3-4?
We absolutely need to go back to a 3-4. The best Falcons defenses in recent years were under Wade Phillips and his 3-4 schemes. We play in a pass heavy league in 2011 going forwards, the base 4-3 doesn't cut it anymore.

The 03 defense was by far and away the worst defense the Falcons fielded this decade, possibly even in their entire 40+ year history. |
