Q & A: Corey Peters quietly goes about his business

FLOWERY BRANCH -- Falcons rookie defensive tackle Corey Peters, a third-round draft pick, has made an instant impact on the defense.

Peters was stout against the run in his first NFL start against Arizona.

"He's a very good leverage player," defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder said. "He's provided us with some size. He's impacting the running game up inside."

Peters, who has his degree from Kentucky in secondary social-studies education, is the quiet rookie. He has worked hard to blend in and quietly go about his business.

Peters spoke with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution about starting as a rookie and getting up at 5 a.m.

Q: How is it going so far through your first couple of games in the NFL?

A: It's been going pretty well. I've been doing some good things and making some rookie mistakes that I have to get corrected. I'm satisfied with the way things have been going. Hopefully I can continue to improve, and everything will be all right.

Q: What was it like making your first start against Arizona?

A: It was pretty cool. It was a different atmosphere. I want to be a dependable guy out there for my teammates. I want them to trust me when I'm out on the field. That's always my goal, especially when I'm out there with the first unit.

Q: Who's helped you out the most during your transition to the pros?

A: It's been some of the younger guys, Vance Walker and Trey Lewis. We kind of stand back to the side and discuss things about what works and what doesn't. They've always provided a shoulder to lean on if I need to talk about something.

Q: Are you settled into the area?

A: Yeah, pretty much. I'm making it work for me except for maybe getting up too early.

Q: In college you got to sleep in a little bit?

A: A little bit more than we do here. We practiced in the morning at Kentucky, but for the most part I could sleep to 7 a.m. Here, I'm up by 5 a.m.

Q: What do you do when you're able to get away from the facilities?

A: Really, it's just been all football. I might come in and do a little extra work or watch a little extra film. I'm just new to the area and don't know anybody. I don't have any family here. I'm by myself pretty much.

Q: Any outside interests?

A: Nothing really right now because I've been so busy. Once I get situated, I want to do some things with kids and in the education field.

Sounds like we have another good-upcoming DT for us.

If he keep up this pace, he'll be one of the great ones in THE League.

He's been so beastly I've forgotten about Peria. Nice read.

I know right & Peria hasn't exactly been a slouch either. with the exception of those 2 big runs against we've been pretty stout against the run. now we just need that push up the middle in our pass defense and we can be truly sick

Yup. I'd like to be more impressed Peria, but neither run was on a DT. Which is impressive, considering how terribly we have been in the middle.

Well, that Mendenhall run was quite a bit on Trey Lewis who was knocked in the mouth & pushed back 5 yards straight into Coleman. It was on a DT, just not Jerry or Peters. Neither run was to their side. The second run was an end-around & we just didn't have ANYONE there to make the play. That was just a bad play call.

Do what?

Coleman played deep on the Mendenhall run, and none of our DTs were knocked backwards. The guy pushed back was Mike Peterson, straight into Grimes...

The second run(assuming you're talking about Hightower's 80 yard run) was an end around? Are we even watching the same games?
