Player safety, helmets - it makes much more sense now.
ESPN.com
NEW YORK -- Members of the NFL's head, neck and spine committee say the league shouldn't have an official helmet anymore.

The committee is meeting Wednesday with representatives of helmet makers, engineers, the military and NASCAR to gather information about improving safety.

Although players can wear any helmet that passes a safety standard, the NFL and Riddell have had a licensing/sponsorship arrangement since 1990. Only that brand can appear on a helmet during a game.

The NFL estimates that 75 percent of helmets used this season are made by Riddell, 23 percent are made by Schutt, 1 to 2 percent by Xenith, and a handful by Adams USA.

Dr. Robert Cantu, senior adviser to the league committee, said the NFL-Riddell relationship should be severed as soon as it can be contractually.

75% of players wear the old fashioned Riddell helmets, which are worn by players in 99% of concussions I've seen the past few years. Turns out the NFL has a contract with Riddell. This is why Herr Fuhrer Gooddell won't ban Riddell helmets, Riddell pays the NFL to allow their logo on tv. Instead, he fines players for hits, adding to the NFL's coffers. You keep it classy Gooddell.

This is true, but not all the blame can be placed on Goddell. When Desean Jackson was coming back after D-Rob gave his grandkids a concussion, he said he didn't want to wear one of the more safely designed helmets because it was "ugly". When you have players that are more concerned about looking cute than protecting themselves, you can wonder if the concussions might do them some good.

Probably why they're so dumb to begin with.

And they won't make you wear a mouthpiece, which have been proven to drastically reduce the risk of concussion.

The NFL front office is full of hypocrites.
