PASSER/RECEIVER ANALYSIS
Every year I watch the games with my DVR and slow-mo the pass plays to determine certain things about our receivers and quarterback that I can't get easily from stats. This year, because I am very interested in the pass protection productivity of our line, I am also timing every snap from the point it is snapped to the point it leaves Ryans hand. I did this in this game and it was very time consuming - so I probably won't do that for every game. I'll do it for a variety of games though - those where we do well vs. do poorly, 3-4 vs. 4-3, etc.

This is not an argument for any specific point - I am merely sharing with you information that I've taken the time to gather that is hard to get elsewhere. I'll update it every week with the new totals rather than creating a different one for every week, however, I have the spreadsheets which contains the breakdown week by week, play by play and player by player if you are interested.

Receiver stats are based on targeted passes - not position, so yes - there are HB's, FB's, TE's and WR's included. Second - these numbers relate ONLY to the passing stats - not rushing. I will keep these numbers up as YTD numbers in this same thread.

RE: PASSER/RECEIVER ANALYSIS
Updated with week 5 and week 6 now.

Before you ask:

These are my times for Roddy's drops:

Game 1 - 1st Qtr 6:26 left
Game 1 - 3rd Qtr 13:11 left
Game 1 - 3rd Qtr 2:11 left
Game 3 - 1st Qtr 5:50 left

I define a drop as a pass which is catchable by 90% of the receivers in his same spot (ie: #1 receiver) - if it hits the hands or the chest or if I feel they could hold on to it.

Someone goes through the game tape to get those same numbers on Stats as well. I don't know if they go frame by frame like I do or if they watch it at game speed - but I would say that every "drop" call is subjective to the viewer.

haha, you are good Tandy. That's where I was going to go with it. I don't have any of those games still on my dvr so I can't go back and look, BUT, I'm gonna roll with the folks on TV who keep saying he's the only receiver who hasn't had a drop yet Tongue
And not because I don't believe you, but because I like the recognition that Roddy is getting.

Well, even Stats, Inc has him down for 1 drop - they have since the first game.

I'm not sure where the reporters are getting the numbers they are reporting - but I can give you some still shots of those drops. Like I said before - it's subjective. But, before I call any play a drop - I review it over and over and over and over. I slo-mo it to see if the ball really went right to them. I look at the other circumstances - how much did the defender really affect the results, etc. Then, I look at who's catching it. I'm not going to grade Michael Palmer the same way I would Roddy White. Roddy, to me, is a top 5 -10 receiver and our number one guy. He should be making the catches that guys in his same category would make 90% of the time.

You can decide after re-watching the video - and I'll be glad to listen to any debate about it.

RE: PASSER/RECEIVER ANALYSIS
These are horrible shots - but I don't have the games on my computer - these are screen shots. Maybe someone with the games on their computer can give better ones.
My definition for Roddy- he's a top 10 receiver and our number 1 go to guy. He should make the catches that 90% of the other receivers in his position would make. Remember - all drops are subjective.

Game 1 - 3rd Qtr. 13:11 left: ( I think he sort of tripped himself up a little on this play - but he should have held on to the ball - IMO)

RE: PASSER/RECEIVER ANALYSIS
Looks like game 3 was a great defensive play more than anything.

Also, it's interesting to watch our time till pass. If we keep it above 2 seconds, then we have been winning those games.
Our highest scoring game was 2.2 seconds.

I believe this is showing how inconsistent our offense is. Our line needs to do a better job.

RE: PASSER/RECEIVER ANALYSIS
Very cool of you to post the shots. Looking at them like that, the only one I would fault him with would be the 2nd. Now if he makes the other 3, those are 3 pretty impressive catches, but in all 3 of them, you have just a few people in the league who bring those in.

Like I said - it's subjective.

I admit - I judge Roddy harsher than Jenkins or Douglas because Roddy is supposed to be (and is - in my opinion) a top 5 or 10 receiver in the league. I would expect him to make the catches that I truly believe guys like Fitzgerald, Boldin, Wayne, Driver, Johnson, Nicks, Royal and even Steve Smith will make.

I believe they make every one of those catches. When you go through the sequence of the catch on DVR frame by frame - including the replays - you see that in every case - the ball was in his hands at one point. In his hands. In no case did a defender actually cause the ball to leave his hands.

In the last one - which was the one hardest for me to call a drop - it wasn't the shots you see which determined it for me - I just can't seem to catch the screen shots I want - I'll try to get them for you - it's just going to take me getting a program on my computer where I can get a frame by frame freeze. I'll try to do that later this week. There are shots which clearly show - he had the ball - but he caught it against his body - then let it slip down below his hands - where the defender then knocked it away. You could argue it was defended - but if he had held the ball in his hands instead of with his body - that's a catch and he comes up with the ball. That's why I finally decided on a drop.

If I had some clearer criteria and we could all agree on it - I would be happy to change the way I record them.

We could say:

1. If there is a defender in contact - regardless of the impact the defender has - then it is not a drop. (I am pretty sure this is what they do on the stat sites - but to me - that's not holding the receiver accountable for their own actions)
2. If the ball is not a straight shot into the hands with no contortion of the body then it is not a drop, regardless of how many other receivers would catch it.
3. If the receiver has to jump, there is no call for a drop.
4. If the receiver goes to the ground after the catch - regardless of how long it was in his hands, it is not a drop.

Those are all reasonable rules, I guess - just not ones I've used to relieve the player of responsibility for the catch.

I'll let you guys decide though.

RE: PASSER/RECEIVER ANALYSIS
I have all of the games (except for the Philly game) on my PC. I couldn't bring myself to download last weeks debacle.

Did you get all of the screen shots you needed?
