There hasnt been a mock draft in the history of the NFL that has ever turned out accurate.

I know one may say the level of competition he was up against as KU doesn't indicate how good he could be. But he played against some good teams, he played against Moore and Spoon and as good as they say Spoon is in coverage I saw Kerry get th better of him quite a few times. He wasn't a burner but he could stretch a field vertically and horizontally. The guy's game is knowing the route tree and also being confident in breaking off a route to find the hole in coverage in addition to this its his ability to make the easy catch and make freakish catches. I agree that to expect him to come out popping at the start of the season is unrealistic but we don't know how bad the tear was, whether it was an obliteration or just a tear. I think it is sad, because what I had seen of Kerry made me excited as we needed a guy who was a cerebral receiver someone who could see the game how Matt sees it, that is extremely valuable. Look at Collie and Edelmann they aren't burner receivers but they can read coverages very well and hurt a defense that way. As a coach when working with Offense I have always gone for 3 types of receiver my number 1 ideally can do everything can't be one dimensional needs speed but strength needs to go up and get it if need be. Fortunately the last team I coached I had one of those. You then want a guy to work underneath that can harass linebackers with their speed, essentially someone who raids the under coverage as their main occupation. I had a few receivers who could do that reasonably well. The stand out of the group however was my option or possession receiver. In the last I coached this guy was a student of the game. He had played QB and when our QB went down it was him rather than the 2nd strong QB we turned to (He is now QB full time) The value of your 2nd receiver being able to run routes at all levels of the field is through the roof. Look at the Driver Jennings pairing or the old Fitz Boldin pairing having 2 multi faceted receivers keeps the secondary honest. For the Falcons 2nd receiver at the moment is a limitation. Roddy saw a hell of a lot of rotated coverage or double coverage and yet look at his numbers that shows how good a player he is how great the connection from Matt to Roddy is. Quality support on the opposite side of the field would make that connection more productive in my opinion even if it meant Roddy got targeted slightly less. I genuinely thought that KM could push for that number 2 by this year if he had not gone down last season. Being realistic I don't think anyone could expect him to be starting after coming off the ACL, that being said if he is the physical specimen that scouts had had him down as I think he could bounce back to be a valuable receiver but behind the number 2 this season as the squad stands. A guy like Meier's value at the moment is at its best if we see us go with more receivers on the field, we've seen how good the Falcons have been when we go 4 wide or 5 wide, I don't get why we don't do this more often. Can't do it all the time but for me it was a rarity. I hope by the end of the draft and FA our WR group looks like this at the least Roddy Jenkins HD Weems Meier 1 x new acquisition This isn't a depth chart. My ideal depth chart would see someone else opposite Roddy. If we are gonna remain on this path offensively when we are going 2 receivers on the field we need more of our number 2 than we are currently getting. I am not saying Jenkins is a crap player but options for getting him the ball are limited. |
